Fox News host slams CBC documentary
TORONTO - Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly has lashed out at a CBC documentary featuring guests who were highly critical of his show.

The Fifth Estate's website says the documentary examines the "war of words that's pitting conservative against liberal."

"It's loud, it's raucous, but does it have anything to do with the truth?" the site asks about the new kind of hard-hitting political debate on U.S. television.

Journalists, media watchers and other talk show hosts in the documentary took aim at the O'Reilly Factor and show's relationship with the truth.

I want to direct folks to it, but all I've found so far is the clip with Coulter.

5. I looked for it too
Evidently, they sell videos for some pretty fancy bucks, and not for at least two weeks after the broadcast. Same for a written transcript. So unless someone taped it and launched it themselves, it ain't available.

16. Nope
It's all about international licensing and broadcast rights. CBC programs sometimes show up later on U.S. networks -- such as "An American In Canada," for instance, getting aired on some PBS stations recently.

There are several discussion forums and old Usenet discussions about the practicalities of getting Canadian TV in the USA, and thousands of people do (by paying full monthly fees to the satellite companies, not by hacking), but this is probably not the place to be talking about such things. Hello, Agent Rick!

have. They could then market it to US companies and it would help get some alternate viewpoints down here.

The CBC has the potential of becoming the BBC for this side of the globe if the Canadian people and the Canadian government endorse that policy.

Newsworld International, till Al Gore et al. bought it.
http://www.nwitv.com

Still shows The National every night, though. It's on many digital cable systems if you pay for the proper tier of service.

But it's for news only, not entertainment programming. And some of the CBC's comedy shows (Air Farce, 22 Minutes) have been exceptionally harsh on Chimpy and Co.

Edited on Sat Jan-29-05 06:58 PM by w4rma
by the Canadian government as the CBC is.

Started by CBC in 1994, and most recently owned by Vivendi Universal, Newsworld International is available in about 17 million U.S. homes. The channel has had several owners since it was started. U.S. cable mogul Barry Diller bought it about three years ago and later sold out to Vivendi.
http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2004/05/04/business/goreNWI_040505

Nonetheless, Vivendi was planning to sell to General Electric, who was also bidding, if INdTV hadn't bought the company.

Pravda???? My goodness, unlike US media outlets which are eerily similar to Pravda lately, the CBC dares to actually report the news and not follow the bush propaganda or dull the minds of their citizens with infotainment.

I can only assume you have not watched CBC given it is (gasp) from that nasty old country called Canada.

48. I lived in Canada for five years, and unless there has been a great
change, I found that the CBC and Fifth Estate should be a model for American Broadcasting. No yelling, screaming, lying. Sure it is a Canadian show with a Canadian POV, but not so much so that it will lie, cheat and slander as does such outlets like Australian Murdock News.

Dont mind some of the rude and untactful responses, Virginia Dem.

The CBC isnt like Pravda. While it is a crown corporation, it's about as autonomous and politically balanced as you can get for a mainstream media outlet it the Western World - including the private corporations which govern the American media. It does reflect the Canadian POV, which is more "left wing" than the American political system, but it isn't a propaganda arm of the gov't.

After all, he's been through the Franken incident, he's regularly torn apart on Media Matters, the movie Outfoxed has come out, why is this so different for him? Maybe it's because this is a potentially new audience he's trying to reach? I don't know.

21. okay I saw the documentary
and it was fine, it was unbiased, and was very much like an outfoxed light, re: less conspiracy slanted. It referred to the talking points of the day memos of FNC, and wasn't exlusively on fox or O'reilly.

There was an interview with Ann Coulter that made her look like the whole thing was a competition, left versus right, and also looked that there was nothing to do with "truth" rather she made it seem like whomever had a louder voice was "winning" but she always does that.

There was lots of clips of O'Reilly dissing canada, and explaining how he'd put a ban on buying canadian products, like he did to the french, and how effective that was, so canada better worry. So they looked at trade with France and saw that the US is actually buying 5% more french products while the french are buying much less after Bill's ban on the french products.

I really don't see why Bill has his knickers in a twist over this one, it was basically facts, and clips of him and other conservatives, making claims they could prove to be false.

They also looked at the left wing loud machine and it's build up over the last few years, or how donahue was cancelled for being liberal...

and how major corporations stand to gain by slanting the news, and what they ignore in coverage compared to other countries less biased news stations.

Bill called this Propoganda, but it is pretty clear he is the one who is in fear of being exposed.

31. Fox News is now in Canada.
So much for liberal values to the north.

"The Fox News Channel is the highest-rated news network in the United States. In mid-December, Rogers Communications announced it had added Fox to its all-digital channel lineup, becoming the first in Canada to do so."

Yeah, FNC is on the lineup. So is Al Jazeera. Unless you can quote how many people have signed up for FNC, your statement is premature (or immature).

If you thought that Canada was some sort of liberal utopia without a single right-wing asshole, you are naïve.

38. Faux is subscription only....
so it's audience is very limited at best. I suspect it's popularity will match, oh, lets say, a macrame channel would. Faux has to abide by OUR CRTC standards which do no allow lying so I suspect they won't last long anyway.

61. It showed up on my dish ...
I suppose it's included in one of the packages I already subscribe to. I noticed it on Christmas Eve (worse Christmas "present" ever). Until last night, I hadn't watched it ... but tuned into O'Reilly because I just knew he'd be going nuts about The Fifth Estate. Well, turns out I fell asleep before his rant came on. So there's the impact that screaming idiots on TV have on this particular Canadian.

58. If it's any consolation, the CRTC (Canadian Radio and Television
Commission)issued a license for Fox News Canada a few years back and even with having to originate some cheap talking-heads programs to fill their Canadian Content (aka CanCon) requirements, they weren't willing to try to chance it. So, they fall back on an American import with no Canadian input (except when Billy boy spouts-off about us)

Tee hee. Too sweet!

..... But the CBC is head and shoulders above Faux News...

A boycott of Canada won't go too far... Considering Canada is America's largest trading partner... And under free trade things go back and forth freely...

I'm sick of Albertans getting stereotyped as "right-wingers".

The right-wingers all across Canada are drooling for Fox. Well just drooling really.

50. Anyone else notice this.......
I listened to the news segment at the link listed above and Bill O'Lielly says that the Canadian government funds this station and he considers it their fault that it went to air. I found this statement very interesting on a couple of levels.

The first level is that journalists down here get paid by the government and they play nice so why is it that government sponsored journalists up there do not play so nice? Well, Bill, I guess you need to know a thing or two about the whole situation. The 'journalists' down here are actually paid to spread propaganda and are not real journalists - not in the sense of their predecessors. The journalists in Canada are real and take their job seriously. They do not live in Amerika.

The second level of Bill's comments is that Bushco keeps journalists in line. I mean, you have seen what has become of people who dare defy the chimp, they get fired or need to resign. Bill can not fathom a government that lets people report without any interference - and report the truth! *gasp* He thinks the Canadian government should have reporters on as tight a leash as the chimp does.

I found this one line, that he said, to be very telling.

We provide an example of a political culture that (mostly) rejects them. That is dangerous in their world view. It proves that right wing ascendency is not inevitable.

news channel on the idiot box. Seeing it for the first time, it astounded me that they cycled through the same 4 stories all the bloody time; like nothing else mattered except those 4 stories.

Talk about TV for those with ADD! ;)

71. we stayed at a hotel in Thailand where Fox News was the only
channel in English. My son kept turning it on to "know the opposition" and my husband, who thinks my son and I are too radical, was usually the first to turn it off in disgust.

I don't think we ever lasted more than 5 minutes then we would rant for hours about the inaccuracies in those 5 minutes!

We were with a tour group, bunch of people we didn't know, I ventured to say at one point "we're in news withdrawl as the only station is Fox and we can't watch it." Everyone on the tour agreed! (Well, everyone within ear shot. I bet the guy who wouldn't go into a temple there because he had to take off his shoes and that would be like worshiping a different god and his god (Pentacostal) wouldn't like that, was a Fox fan. He wasn't around when we had this discussion.) They were as pissed as we were. I was so happy to learn I was with my tribe.

They get some other newscasts, but not in primetime.

Oh yeah, they get Limbaugh every day for the full three hours.

Others know more about this. If you're one of them, join in.

96. Take a look at the lady O'Lielly had to get to dis Canada!
Her name is Rachel Marsden and she is a total nut case! Here's her "resume". She has been charged with harassing men in Canada.
Given O'Lielly's proclivity for harassment, one has to wonder if 'like attracts like'.

Here's a link to a news article about the 'lady'.

Vancouver woman charged with harassment

VANCOUVER – The 28–year–old woman who falsely accused a swim coach at Simon Fraser University of sexual harassment in the mid 1990s, now faces a charge of criminal harassment.

Rachel Marsden was arrested by Vancouver Police after a 52–year–old Vancouver man complained of being harassed by phone and e-mail.

snip

Crown counsel has requested an evaluation of her mental state.

snip

Back in 1995, an SFU swim coach was fired after Marsden went public with her allegations. He was later reinstated following an investigation.
