Lip implant tissue link with mad cow disease

FEARS that cosmetic implants used in lips and cheeks could trigger vCJD, the human form of “mad cow” disease, have prompted the Government to launch an investigation.

Sir Liam Donaldson, the Chief Medical Officer, said that experts were examining the possibility that tissue implants such as collagen could transmit blood-borne diseases such as variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease if contaminated. Although no evidence of such transmission has been discovered, the committee on microbiological safety of blood and tissues believes there might be a risk.

The expert group’s study of a range of aesthetic fillers, which are often made from human or bovine tissue, had already found samples containing material from dead bodies and birds, Sir Liam added.

The investigation is part of an overhaul of the cosmetic treatments industry, designed to root out the growing number of “cowboys” offering unregulated procedures such as Botox injections, implants and chemical skin peels. Under new rules, rogue clinics will be shut and practitioners prosecuted in an attempt to improve patient safety. As many as a sixth of providers could be forced to close.

And these "byproducts" turn up in an amazing variety of unexpected places. Many cosmetic products contain fat from rendered cattle, and the collagen from the bones is made into cheerful-looking, fruity gelatin. There are thousands of other "hidden" uses for rendered beef products, where consumers may not be aware that they are eating them. Given the extraordinary resistance to standard sterilizationn procedures of the agent that causes Mad Cow Disease, I have wondered about the range of potentially infectious but nonobvious products. This article suggests there are good reasons to be concerned.

It's as if the writer doesn't know what he is talking about. Lip and cheek implants? Cheek implants might well be made of some beef by-product, I don't know about this, but when the writer says lip implants, is he speaking of a permanent surgical implant,( a fiber like string threaded through the lips to puff them up permanently), or is it injectable Collagen that is being referred to. Collagen is injected by needle and lasts only 4-6 months. The cows used to produce Collagen are not your normal cows and are used for nothing else except Collagen production. The Collagen is grown under the skin of the cows and harvested, purified and rigorously tested. A skin test is required for allergies. If the skin test is OK, then you shouldn't have a problem. You do not need a skin test for Botox, at least that's what they say. It freezes facial muscles and most I have seen who use it look to be frowning constantly. Who wants to live like that, with a permanent hateful look on their face? Restalyn is new to the market and results look good.I used Collagen for 12 years, but just did start using Restalyn. It is similar to Collagen, but the results are longer lasting. As for injecting Botox at parties and beauty salons, they do this, but a Dr. would need to be on the premises for it to be legal. I can't imagine anyone letting someone monkey around with this stuff, and inject it into their face that doesn't have a medical license. Any Dermatologist can do these injections, and most have had advanced training in non surgical injections.

I know this for fact... My girlfriend had this done and the doctor, trimmed off her shin from her inner upper tight skin and implanted into her lips. This above article is outrageous.

Available implants for lip augmentation can be classified as liquid form or sheet form. Liquid collagen injections were once the mainstay of lip augmentation, but they lost favor due to short-lived effects (they lasted no more than 6 weeks). Collagen is explained further in the wrinkle section. Some implants for lip augmentation are in sheet form. The three options for this are Alloderm, Dermaplant, fascia, or Gore-Tex.

BTW a year ago I felt cursed because I was allergic to collagen and had to flip a higher bill for (my own) fat injections. They last longer and I will get NO more ... even if I have to contend with going back to my European "pencil thin" smackeroos. At least they're natural.
