Iraqi Leader Urges U.S. Troops to Stay

By MARIAM FAM, Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq (news - web sites)'s president said Tuesday it would be "complete nonsense" to ask foreign troops to leave the country now, although some could depart by year's end. Officials began the final vote tally from elections to produce a government to confront the insurgency.
Despite scattered clashes in rebel areas across the country, Iraq reopened its borders Tuesday and commercial flights took off from Baghdad International Airport as authorities eased security restrictions imposed to protect last weekend's landmark voting.

<snip>

Sunday's election, which occurred without catastrophic rebel attacks, raised hopes that a new Iraqi government would be able to assume greater responsibility for security, hastening the day when the 170,000 U.S. and other foreign troops can go home.

During a news conference, President Ghazi al-Yawer was asked whether the presence of foreign troops might be fueling the Sunni Arab revolt by encouraging rebel attacks.

"It's only complete nonsense to ask the troops to leave in this chaos and this vacuum of power," al-Yawer, a Sunni Arab, said.

1. Wouldn't that be "soon to be ex-president" wants them to stay
What makes him think he'll have any say in it?

3. Didn't the Shiite ticket endorsed by Sistani call for the removal of
US troops and isn't that the ticket that should win considering the enormous Shiite turnout? Or has Sistani sold out his people too?

4. if it was a REAL ELECTION
*sigh*

we are supposed to believe that this misadministration, which tramples on the rights of Democratic voters in AMERICA, gives a SHIT about the "voting rights" of FOREIGNERS? Believe me, whoever "wins" will be doing exactly what Bush Inc WANTS.

9. I'm sure you're right -- but I can't help but feel such pity for
the Iraqis. Robert Fisk interviewed a lot of them and it seems that they had such high hopes that their vote would actually make a difference; many if not most wanted to believe that voting would mean that the US troops would leave.

15. I admire the Iraqi people a great deal
I feel sorry for them; like our military, they are being used by bush inc and they are paying a very high price for it too

6. This guy is on the same page with Bushco
Right down to the last detail that "some" troops are going to leave by the end of the year. And, judging by the silence from Sistani, hes in cahoots too.

10. Hmm....funny thing about that.
"It's only complete nonsense to ask the troops to leave in this chaos..."

Back before the election (sic), we were saying how bad things were in Iraq but the Monkey King kept saying "Freedom is on the march! We're building schools, shopping malls. Things are really improving. People are throwing flowers, blah blah blah."

But now, Oh no...we couldn't possibly leave, because everything is so chaotic.

Hmmm...which is it, Mr. al Yawer? You and the Chimp need to get on the same page! :eyes:
