Stations to air controversial cartoon (PBS-Buster)
http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/TV/02/02/tv.pbs.lesbians.ap/index.html

Several PBS stations will air an episode of the children's show "Postcards From Buster" despite the network's decision not to distribute it nationwide because two lesbian couples were depicted in it.

So far, 21 stations have said they will air it and another six have indicated they probably will, Jeanne Hopkins, spokeswoman for Boston's WGBH-TV, said Tuesday. The station produced the series.

PBS said last week it would not distribute the episode to its 349 stations around the country. The show features an animated character, Buster, visiting farms in Vermont where maple sugar is produced, and includes two lesbian couples that work on the farms.

3. Do they actually say
"Hi we're lesbians?" Or is it like the UCC comercial where you see a women put her arm around the shoulder of another women and two men trying to enter a church together?

4. I object to the notion that lesbians can harvest maple syrup
The Bible says that maple syrup is only meant to be harvested by a man and a woman.

They can marry anyone they want...

but we have to think of the TREES!

11. I hear it's more of the latter.
The word "lesbian" is never used, nor does anyone draw special attention to the fact that the couple is two women.

Because they are ANIMATED characters, for crying out loud! The religious right is always whining about cartoon and puppet characters. How silly is that?

5. Good for them
I hope that my Maryland PBS station is one of them. My daughter is too young yet to appreciate Arthur or Postcards from Buster, but if they show it I'll have her watch it. We are fortunate to have as good friends a lesbian couple raising a child, so that she will grow up knowing that not all households look like ours - a mommy and a daddy. Of course ours is still not the fundy preferred norm where dad works his ass off at work every day while mom stays home working hers off with the kids - I work and my husband stays home with our daughter.

6. Canadians are noted for maple syrup/sugar, too.
And a high degree of social tolerance. Just more insidious pro-maple syrup/sugar propaganda. I don't even think maple trees are mentioned in the Bible.

10. Oh my, think of all the children!
What are we going to do when all our kids suddenly tell us they want to grow up and--gulp--become maple syrup makers.

I swear, if we don't stop the syrup makers now, they'll take over.

I also expect outrage from Iowa--what the hell is wrong with PBS, completely ignoring corn syrup providers!

12. OMDG! Buster is about the most innocuous cartoon on the
planet and PBS has to be sensitive to this kind of mind control crap!?

15. I just watched the Buster episode with my 2 year old daughter.
Edited on Wed Feb-02-05 07:05 PM by IanDB1
(On edit:
For those who don't know, while Buster is a cartoon character, he visits real people.

He speaks to them "off-camera" in a sort of cinema verite style.)
----

My daughter he liked all the cows.

The word "lesbian" never came up.

They never even said "wife" or "married."

The children said that one mom was their step-mother and that the other kids were step-sisters, etc.

They were "partners," and "mommies" and "step-mothers."

Buster said something like, "You sure have a lot of mommies."

There were two lesbian families, each with a whole bunch of kids.

There were also two straight families. One raised cows, the other made maple syrup.

I don't know why the fundies didn't like the episode.

There was even a PRAYER!

Actually, it was a JEWISH prayer, so I guess to the Christians it wouldn't count.

Oh, and at the end the children were screaming, "Why don't we have a daddy! I feel so damaged and traumatized! I need a daddy!"

OK, they weren't. Instead, they ate cheese and stuff made with maple syrup.

17. Dallas' PBS will show it "in the evening when parents can watch"
Morning News said that they are delaying when it will be on...to a future date <i.e hoping people will probably forget about it and they just won't show it?) so they can have it on in the evening time so kids can watch it with their parents.
