MEXICO CITY (AFP) - US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice (news - web sites)'s scheduled meeting with Pope John Paul (news - web sites) II next Tuesday has been cancelled, Mexico's Cardinal Javier Lozano announced. Rice was due to have met with the pope during her current eight-day trip to Europe and the Middle East. Lozano, the papal official who oversees health workers at the Vatican (news - web sites), told Mexican media outlet 'Noticiero al instante' that Rice would instead meet with the Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Angelo Sodano.
Despite the pope's condition having improved, "the holy father's public activity has been limited greatly," said Lozano. "You have to be concerned (because) later complications are not out of the question, but there is no alarm," he added. The pope, who was hospitalized Tuesday in Rome with breathing difficulties, "is not doing badly, he's doing well; he has improved quite a lot."
The cardinal said the Vatican has not yet decided whether the pope will make an appearance at the window of his hospital room for his regular Sunday's Angelus prayer. Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said Thursday that medical tests showed the pontiff was responding well to treatment, but may have to remain in the hospital for a week to recover from the effects of influenza.
