WASHINGTON (AP) -- Activist Simon Rosenberg abandoned his bid for Democratic National Committee chairman on Friday and backed front-runner Howard Dean, moving the former presidential candidate closer to capturing the party title.

Rosenberg's departure from the race leaves a field of three - Dean; Democratic activist Donnie Fowler, who ran the Kerry-Edwards campaign in Michigan, and former Indiana Rep. Tim Roemer.

About 430 voting members of the party's national committee will choose a successor to outgoing DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe on Feb. 12.

In endorsing Dean, Rosenberg said, "While we have not always agreed on every issue, I believe his passion for our party, his remarkable fighting spirit, his direct and powerful way of speaking, and his commitment to bringing regular people back into our party will allow him to revitalize our party and help us win again in the 21st century."

1. I wish Fowler and Roemer would drop out
and I hope that Dean, if he's elected as Chairman of the DNC, will hire Rosenberg.

3. I would be happy w/ Dean as well. He's earned it as far as I'm concerned
and he has the balls to tell it like it is.

5. YES!!!! He's got it locked up!
Edited on Fri Feb-04-05 01:45 PM by hedda_foil
I wouldn't say it before but Rosenberg has more support than Roemer and Fowler. It looks to me like Dean will easily lock up more than the majority he needs TODAY! We may just have a party again, folks!

There is joy in my part of mudville for sure!!!!

7. He had the requisite number of votes this morning
He's at 250 and needed 214...

http://www.mydd.com/story/2005/2/4/113452/8253

The Dean camp says these 250 voting members (see extended entry) represent 241.75 votes, over the majority 214.25 needed to win (release, 2/4). The Fowler camp says that the interview reply by Fowler that "I would be happy to have Howard Dean be my executive director of the DNC" was "a lighthearted joke" and that "he was laughing when he said it, as was Judy". Now I can go on a weeks vacation. Jerome

After first seeing this morning that the Georgia Delegation is on board, and that the New York delegation is on board, I get word that as of this morning, Dean has officially secured enough votes to become the next chairman of the DNC.

Stay tuned for an endorsement from Simon Rosenberg today. (ABC's The Note has already published the fact that Rosenberg is making a "major announcement" on a conference call with reporters at 1pm Eastern; my source tells me it's going to include an endorsement of Gov. Dean.)

8. Funny....
None of the BIG news sites has this information....Now when Donnie Fowler falsley announced the ASDC's endorsement Time/CNN/MSNBC all had it on their web sites.

Now, Dean sews up the Chair's position and their saying "Howard Who?"

Guess his winning isn't as big of news as the scream! Jerks

9. The irony is that I found this on the website of the Richmond Times
Dispatch which is the daily paper here in Richmond; it's slanted to the right. Odd, huh?

12. Actually it wasn't a false announcement
Fowler had the endosrsement of the ASDC Executive Committee and that's what he announced on Sunday.

And, honestly, this isn't big news to most people. If Howard Dean wasn't in the running none of the media would be talking about it at all.

How many people even know who the DNC Chair was before McAuliffe?

Former DNC Chair Don Fowler Faces The Committee
Aired September 9, 1997 - 10:00 a.m. ET

After weeks of sessions in July, and a brief focus last week on Vice President Al Gore, today the target of these G.O.P. dominated hearings is the man who ran the Democratic Party during the '96 election. He is Don Fowler, and CNN's money trail correspondent Brooks Jackson has learned that after months of being a loyal soldier, Fowler may now be prepared to point a finger at others, including at someone who was once one of President Clinton's closest allies.

<snip>

He accuses Harold Ickes, the former White House deputy chief of staff, of constantly interfering in DNC operations -- quote -- "He was involved in the management of the DNC in a fashion that I didn't appreciate that I didn't agree with.

It's a big change from last November, when Fowler defended the White House role.

DON FOWLER, FORMER DNC CHAIRMAN: There was no pressure to cut corners, or to do things that were improper to raise money. Absolutely not. Period. Zero. Nothing.

11. Dean will be effective.
The GOP has had some effective party leaders. Of course they aren't "party leaders" in the sense of a disciplined centralized organization, but they help to articulate the party as a national, coherent force. Dean can do that since he has the necessary vision and understanding of the political terrain, AND is not beholden to the decrepit elites in the party.

I hope this helps to institutionalize the "rebellion" of the activists in the past year and to implement real change.

13. I wonder if the GOP will now regret that they
helped "out" Dean during the primaries (even if Dean had actually won the presidency). Something tells me that Dean in as DNC chair is a bigger threat to their hold on congress in 2006 than he and the Dems would have been had he been nominated and won the presidency.

17. Rosenberg
was the best candidate IMHO, but Dean is definitely the man of the hour. I hope our party makes the best use of Rosenberg's many talents. Deb is right, Fowler is a little twit.
