Clark Makes It Official, Running for President

LITTLE ROCK — Retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark wasted no time getting to the words that supporters came to hear Wednesday as TV crews from major networks and reporters from across the country gathered to record what everyone has been speculating for several weeks.

"My name is Wes Clark; I am from Little Rock, Ark., and I'm here to announce that I intend to seek the presidency of the United States of America," Clark said as those in the crowd outside James H. Penick Boys and Girls Club waved mostly homemade signs.

During his speech he launched into an attack of President Bush's domestic policies.

He said the Republican's policies "have cost us more jobs than our economy has had the energy to create."

Since Bush took office in 2001, almost 2.7 million U.S. jobs have been lost, Clark said, adding he would restore those positions.

The retired four star Army general and decorated Vietnam veteran also said that "more than 100,000 American troops are fighting abroad and once again, at home, Americans are concerned about civil liberties."

Today I announce that I am running for President of the United States of America. I speak not only for my candidacy. I speak for a new American century and a new generation of Americans -- both young people and the young at heart. We seek the great restoration of American values and the restoration of our nation's traditional purpose in the world.
