Students back principal held in brawl
A popular Bronx principal charged with attacking a cop in school was cheered by students yesterday in a case that has raised questions about overzealous officers.

"He was protecting a student," said Aysa Johnson, 16, a junior at Bronx Guild High School in Castle Hill who said she saw part of the incident.

Chris Velez, 16, a Guild junior, said, "Most everybody thinks he was looking out for the girl. He's a good guy, down to earth."

Guild Principal Michael Soguero was arrested Thursday and charged with assault and obstruction.

some more background details-

Last week, Soguero told the Daily News that tensions were running high at his school because of the heavy police presence.

Bronx Guild is one of six small schools tucked into the same building as Adlai Stevenson High School. Stevenson is on the city's list of most dangerous schools and teams of cops are used to secure it.

But Soguero told The News that the security has clashed with the mission of the smaller schools, which do not have the same discipline problems.
...
Soguero and Bergos, 23, were charged with second-degree assault and obstructing governmental procedure. The student, whose name was not released, was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

1. Sounds like she went to the office for sanctuary,
and the principal and assistant were trying to back her up.
WTF is up with the police state atmosphere?

2. I don't know but with all the police presence in schools,
and the illogical conclusion that they can be right in every single altercation, isn't it a little weird that there haven't been more stories like this?

4. Maybe people are finally getting fed up,
getting their eyes opened.
It's so easy to make parents and kids comply with BS;
fear of withholding the diploma, or having the kid labeled as troublemaker is usually all it takes.
The decent school officials don't like to see the kids treated unfairly or inhumanely.

I do wonder if the stories are being allowed to be printed in order to make examples of the dissenters,
or if the press is finally realizing a police state might not be a good thing.

3. Good for that principal...
I think he see his position as analogous to a ship's captain: Inside his building, he's the one in complete charge.

I agree with his action. Discipline problems in the school or not, it's kind of counterproductive to have cops running amok. It's not unreasonable to require that the cops clear any actions they take with the principal first.

And good on the kids for supporting him.

8. Crap like this predates Bushco
Schools have been like a police state for a long time now.

When I was in high school in the early 90's, we'd regularly have the local K-9 unit show up for dog sniffs of all the lockers. And the classes were literally under lock down until they finished their work.

9. While that may be true...
I think it's getting worse given the general climate. Those kids who were recently searched without probable cause in the school is just one example. This 'culture of control' is creating a police state.

7. This is exactly the sort of story I expected when they first started
putting "School Resource Officers" in the schools. Some schools even have "Police (or Sheriff's) Sub Stations" placed inside the schools.

Not a good idea under almost all circumstances. We are seeing normal school age behaviors criminalized.

10. We're getting rid of ours.
They're utterly worthless. Worse than worthless. Things we SHOULD be informed about, they don't tell us. Things they should keep their noses out of, they interfere with. One of ours actually lost his GUN during a seminar at one of our schools.
