Another Earthquake
The USGS just reported another large earthquake (magnitude 7.1) in the ocean near the Phillipines.

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqinthenews/2005/usuda2/

I wonder if there will be any aid given to anyone who gets hurts by this.

2. Relatively small quake, and deep under the crust
I would imagine that the seismic waves will dissipate enough to cause little harm.

Hope so.

3. But it's likely that there will be no damage.
It was only an earthquake, they happen all the time.

7. Pacific "Rim of Fire"
We have them all the time around the Pacific's "Rim of Fire"

-- I live in the Guadalupe River - Coyote Creek flood plain - liquefaction plain between the San Andreas Fault (just over yonder west of me) and the Calaveras-Hayward Fault System a couple of blocks up the street (that's the one that goes through the UC Berkeley campus).

SF Bay Area, Japan, Manila -- we have them all the time.

AND WE HAVE CONSTRUCTION CODES -- EVEN BEEN IN A TOKYO HIGH RISE OR A TOYOTA FACTORY FOR AN EARTHQUAKE DRILL?

15. Exactly why I was concerned.
There are too many big earthquakes. Yes, I understand that lots of little earthquakes are actually safer than none at all, but 7.1 is not a small earthquake.

I'm glad that a tsunami wasn't generated by this one. If I lived in that part of the world right now, I'd still be nervous.

13. There were no tsunami warnings issued for this one
But it was on the same plate as the big one in December. It seems that the whole plate is rotating slightly and triggering quakes at various points around its edge.
