Kuwaitis Allege Torture by U.S. Forces

WASHINGTON IN BRIEF

Kuwaitis Allege Torture by U.S. Forces

Six Kuwaiti prisoners said they were severely beaten, given electric shocks and sodomized by U.S. forces in Afghanistan before they confessed to fighting with the Taliban and were sent to the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, their lawyer said yesterday. The Kuwaitis told their lawyer, according to his declassified notes, that most physical abuse ended at Guantanamo, but that the prisoners were subjected to sexual and religious humiliation and prolonged isolation.

Captured in Pakistan or Afghanistan about three years ago, the Kuwaiti men were taken to U.S. bases in Afghanistan, where they were hung by their wrists, beaten with chains and subjected to electric shock, said Tom Wilner, who represents a dozen Kuwaiti captives.
The men said that after torture they admitted they had joined the Taliban or met with al Qaeda members.

At Guantanamo, two detainees said they had crosses shaved into their scalp or body hair. The group said they were stripped naked and kept hooded for long periods of time, and female guards taunted them, Wilner said. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Flex Plexico, a spokesman for the Defense Department, said that detention operations at Guantanamo are "safe, humane and professional." He added that the U.S. military investigates "credible allegations of illegal conduct."

1. Yup, more B.S. concerning our humane treatment.......
.....Didn't the Pentagon eventually drop the charges against the Chaplain at Gitmo.....They had accused him of all kinds of aiding and abetting the muslim prisoners however as it turns out he had simply shown them a tiny fraction of human kindness.....

6. baby_bear, I'm part way through reading the link you posted.
It's so well worth reading. We have been wildly short of information on how this happened, and this series is a tremendous help. Thank you.

9. I guess I didn't realize it hadn't gotten much play elsewhere

For a clear national scandal, it's been largely ignored except locally here in Washington state.

Glad you are reading the series, Judi Lynn! Pass it on!

3. Glad you mentioned it. I went to check on it at google, found the following
Looks as if the "liberal media" kept this story very quiet, actually. This is the FIRST TIME I've heard this part, believe me!
Muslim Chaplain Gets Clean Slate

MIAMI, April 15, 2004

Quote:
"It wouldn't have killed them to admit a mistake."
attorney Eugene Fidell

(AP) A Muslim Army chaplain who had been embroiled in an espionage probe was given a clean slate after a general overturned an adultery and pornography reprimand, the one remaining blemish on his record after the dismissal of criminal charges.

Capt. James Yee had been the target of an investigation of suspected espionage at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp in Cuba, where the military is holding suspected Islamic terrorists.

But Yee was ultimately prosecuted on far less serious charges, which were thrown out last month.

Yee went on to contest the reprimand, and Gen. James T. Hill, commander of the U.S. Southern Command, ruled in his favor Wednesday. Hill decided that the punishment will not go on Yee's military record.

I do think I've heard Capt. Yee went ahead and left the service. Who on earth could blame him? They did everything in their power to destroy him.

8. Danny Schecter's take:
SODOMY CHARGED

There was more news yesterday guaranteed to win hearts in minds in the Muslim world. New stories about sexual torture of detainees in US run prisons are emerging. Al Jazeera has this development:

"US forces abused several Kuwaiti prisoners now held at Guantanamo Bay by beating them with chains, sodomizing them and giving them electrical shocks, their lawyer has said.

"Human rights lawyer Tom Wilner, who represents the 11 Kuwaitis locked up as foreign terrorism suspects at the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, described the abuses on Monday in notes after meeting with the men last month.
