US Should Study Safety of Taser Stun Guns-Group

ATLANTA (Reuters) - The Southern Christian Leadership Conference expressed concern on Monday about taser stun guns, used by police to immobilize suspects with shocks of 50,000 volts, saying 86 deaths have occurred in the past six years.

The guns have become a common tool for police and other law enforcement officers across the United States. The U.S. military also is using them.

But critics, which include the human rights group Amnesty International, have questioned the safety of the weapons.

The report said six people in Georgia died after being hit with Tasers since September, 2003. The Atlanta-based group said it planned to hold hearings across the country to document concerns about the weapons.
