Revealed: John Ehrlichman Believed Henry Kissinger was Deep Throat
By Greg Mitchell

Published: February 16, 2005 11:00 PM ET

NEW YORK In three decades of speculation about the identity of legendary Watergate source “Deep Throat,” few prominent members of the Nixon administration swept up in the scandal have endorsed a likely suspect. Even John Dean has hedged and offered multiple guesses. But now E&P has learned that former top Nixon aide, John Ehrlichman, who went to prison for his role in Watergate, felt strongly that he knew the identity of Deep Throat.

His candidate: Henry Kissinger.

This revelation comes from Walter Anderson, the chairman and CEO of Parade magazine and a close friend of the former Nixon aide, who died in 1999. Ehrlichman, Anderson said, identified Kissinger as Deep Throat in a conversation with him more than 20 years ago.

“He was absolutely convinced of it,” Anderson said, when asked by E&P to comment on the recent surge in speculation about the identity of Deep Throat. He added that Ehrlichman's view of Kissinger as Deep Throat has never surfaced before, as far he knows.

1. How's Henry's health ?
Wasn't there some scuttlebutt a couple weeks back that 'Deep Throat' was near death and the general public would be told his identity very soon - when he passed ?

4. Ben Bradlee has confirmed that he has written Deep Throat's obit
Edited on Thu Feb-17-05 10:36 AM by Jack Rabbit
Bradlee is one of the few people who knows Deep Throat's identity.

However, he didn't say when. It is possible -- even very likely -- that Bradlee wrote the obit as long as thirty years ago and occasionally updates it.

Whoever Deep Throat is, he is probably in his eighties. My money is still on Pat Gray, who is 88.

13. He's my suspect, too.
After reading the book (never saw the movie), I think it was someone in the intelligence community.

21. don't they do that with many famous people ?
which is why news organizations ,especially with the media of today quickly have info on people who die.

because of the special connection Bradlee has to the deep throat story and being the only other one besides woodward and bernstein to know he has special reason for writing the obit.

I got exceited, too, when I read that Bradlee recently said that he had written the obit, but then that angle occurred to me (he didn't recently say that he had written the obit recently).

28. L. Patrick Gray was acting director of the FBI
Edited on Thu Feb-17-05 05:01 PM by Jack Rabbit
By temperament, he was a natural law-and-order Republican; not the kind of person one would think would drag Nixon to his doom. However, it is said he really didn't appreciate the way the FBI was used in cover up, so he talked to Woodward (so the speculation goes) as a way of getting back at Mitchell, Haldeman and Ehrlichman.

Gray's records have been examined and show him to have been in town on the days when Woodward says he met with Deep Throat. Also, he matches much of what Woodward says about Deep Throat (e.g., Gray is a chain smoker). In addition, I think the advice which Deep Throat gave to Woodward, "Follow the money," is the advice of someone who makes a living doing criminal investigations, not that of a White House attorney.

8. They could STILL be playing coy.
When I was at the AP, it was standard procedure to prepared obits for people who were either very old or who had some sort of ailment already (like a heart condition) or who had lived recklessly (like Gary Busey or somebody who'd done a lot of drugs) or very famous so a lot had to be assembled. We just had 'em pretty much completed and stockpiled, and all you did was leave off the top line of the story, so, when the time came, you merely plugged in the update "(Actress, former president, ambassador, producer So-n-so died (was found dead) today (or other daypart) of (fill in the cause here). He/She was (fill in age here). And then you'd plug in the details of whether family was with him/her at the time of death, what the doctors said, the hospital or the police or paramedics or whatever, of if they'd been suffering from thus-n-such for however long. Then, the pre-written body of the story came after that.

I am not at all saying that's what they did here. Just a thought, really. And I wouldn't be surprised if the Washington Post had prepared obits stockpiled for most of the people in/around or previously in/around government and half of Capitol Hill. In fact, they should do that. Maybe Woodward is just being a brat-child and playing coy. Maybe not. I don't have a whole lot of respect for Woodward anymore since he sold out for access, so my tendency is to take what he says with a grain of salt. But he could be playing it straight here, certainly.

10. I've always believed it was Kissinger

I've been a political junkie all my life, and yes I confess was a Nixon supporter. I've always felt that Kissinger was over rated, that he was never anything but Nixon's messenger boy. I think Kissinger worked to bring Nixon down, so that he could stand alone as the architect of detent, and reapproachment with China. He just wanted all the credit, and the best way to do that was to ruin Nixon. The fact that Kissinger has accomplished nothing in his life since Nixon's disgrace only proves to me who had the brains in that administration, and it wasn't that little egomaniac with the heavy accent.

9. Why did Deep Throat have to use the name "Deep Throat"?
Why couldn't it have been something like "Benji"? It's too embarrasing to talk with family members about the topic when you have to throw out the name "Deep Throat".

12. Many theories....
One is that Deep Throat is actually a woman (possibly even Diane Sawyer, yes she does fit into this whole puzzle) and the whole name is a clever pun/witticism, possibly reflecting some relationship she was in at the time.

However, Woodward has recently stated Deep Throat is a man, but he could be lying.

Punny - yes - but hardly clever or witty. The film of the same name came out in 1972 starring porn industry victim Linda Lovelace.

in "All The President's Men", one of the editors jokes that he named Woodward's source Deep Throat. The movie is based on the book they wrote, so its probably accurate.

After checking on a few of Henry's doing's I would say he probably was the most likely candidate.

14. Another popular rumour centred on Jackie Kennedy's sister
Caroline Lee Bouvier Canfield Radziwill, whose ex Prince Stanislaw - a P2 Lodge member and implicated in large scale corruption, theft and money laundering that eventually led to the collapse of Banco Ambrosiano and the murder of "God's Banker" Roberto Calvi - had an impressive record in bribing US politicians, including Nixon.

Also of note are his many business meetings with illusive Shrub ass James R Bath - who along with Robert Maxwell RIP and Richard McGarrach Helms (ex-CIA) sat on the board of directors of the parent company of failed Asian bank BCCI - the International Credit and Investment Corporation (ICIC) and also held shares along with them in this slush funders' moneylaundering paradise.......

16. re: the name
In "All the President's Men" they state the name is simply a pun on a witness who is on "deep background"

My only problem with Kissinger? remember the scene in the book where DT meets Woodward in a bar somewhere on the outskirts of D.C. ? He said it was the kind of neighborhood where they would be safe because no one in the bar was likely to recognise him. Kissinger was world famous at this time. there wasn't a place in the western world he could go and not be recognised, let alone a bar a few miles from the white house...

15. unlikely
The theory that deep throat was a member of the intelligence community is based partly on the fact that Nixon thru Kissinger was operating a back channel to the Chinese, which resulted finally in establishing relations. Since Kissinger was the back channel it is unlikely he chose to bring Nixon down, more likely that those who were angered by being out of the loop would include deep throat in their number.

'meme' of 'deep throat' floats around the hallowed halls of Washington and someone in the White House goes: "Hey - why don't I become the new deep throat and get out of this horrid mess!". W & B allofasudden donation papers?. It just seems too timely. Woodward just finished two books on this White House so he knows all the characters.

They likely have gotten many, many people voluntarily contacting them ore the years and volunteering to be deep cover (who would you call?). And god knows how often that coincides with new 'stories' on deep throat. I say they want the next 10 dissatisfied GOP backroom creeps to 'call them'. Because just before all this deep throat stuff ... it looked like the neocons were angry with the Rovbots and that the paleo-gop were angry at them all.

So would be a good time to go 'fishing'.

In other words W&B are saying Call me!!! :headbang:

IMHO

Edited on Thu Feb-17-05 01:55 PM by brentspeak
Woodward said recently that "when Deep Throat is revealed, it will be obvious WHY he remained anonymous." (stress added)

Taking Woodward at his word, we can then speculate that "why" means Deep Throat is someone who does not want to be known as a rat. And who among the Nixon crew can't afford to be known as a blabber? A diplomat, for one.

Like Henry Kissinger.
