Bush Recalls Stint on Scottish Sheep Farm

6 minutes ago White House - AP

WASHINGTON - "Can you imagine if my name had been Mungo Bush?" the president joked Friday when a British reporter asked him to autograph a book for his son, Mungo. Bush seemed amused by the name.

The exchange occurred as Bush was being interviewed at the White House by European journalists in advance of his trip to Belgium, Germany and Slovakia, beginning Sunday. He also was looking forward to going to Scotland in July for a meeting of the Group of Eight industrialized nations.

That prompted Bush to tell a tale about meeting a Texan when he was at a sheep farm in Scotland back in the 1950s.

"I worked there as a 14-year-old kid," Bush said. "I went from Texas to Scotland to work on a sheep farm. I'm riding a bike. ... A big tour bus stops. They got off and a woman with a Texas accent (said): `Look at the little Scottish boy!'

"I kept my mouth shut," Bush said.

Per a quick Google search, it seems a friend of Poppy's guy named Gammell, had this sheep farm and little George visited. That much appears to be true. Why he was there and what he did there, and how the sheep felt about it, are all unanswered questions.

32. One more unusual link- Blair, Bush and Bill Gammell, son of James
http://www.energybulletin.net/2924.html

Why Blair and Bush are so chummy revealed!:
There is really no need to go to far to know why US President George W Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair get along so famously.

The missing link has now been discovered -- William Gammell, the CEO of Cairn Energy, the whizz-kid oil company that has boomed over the past year.

According to The Telegraph, former Scottish rugby international Gammell, 51, was not only Blair's classmate and and school debating partner, but also shared his childhood with him and Bush.

Gammell, who has just been crowned Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year, used to have George junior over at his place during the school holidays because Gammell's father, James Gammell, was also in the oil business and was a friend of George Bush Senior.

James Gammell is the founder of the Scottish fund manager, Ivory and Sime, which in 1950 backed Bush-Overby, Bush Senior's fledgling oil and natural-gas business. Their sons struck up a friendship and spent childhood holidays together at the Bush family compound at Kennebunkport, Maine, and the Gammell family farm in Perthshire.

And so, when Bush became President, his first words to Blair were, "I believe you know my old friend, Bill Gammell."

" And so, when Bush became President, his first words to Blair were, "I believe you know my old friend, Bill Gammell."

I find the above line to be a perfect example of Bush's failure as a statesman. It's that typical folksy, frat boy kind of bullshit he's so famous for, however it's pathetic when used to greet heads of state. Kind of like Cheney's Auschwitz get up - totally inappropriate for the situation.

I'm just surprised he didn't say "buddy" instead of friend.

14. George Mungo Bush....it has a certain irony to it don't chah think...
...<snip>

St Mungo. That is a name we have all heard, but I wonder how many of us really know who St Mungo was. Most scribes will tell us St. Mungo was born around the year 518 AD, near Culross in Fife. He "is believed to have been born"; the illegitimate son of a Princess, whose name was either Thenew or Thaneit, daughter of King Lothus, ruler of the kingdom of Lothian. That we may try to understand the man who became a Saint; we have to go back in time, to a time before he was born. <more>

Read the story, Dubya ain't no Mungo.

Little Bo Creep and the Pulling of Wool
By Eileen Smith

July 18, 2001 (APJP) -- Any bug on the wall of Bush family gatherings must surely witness a cacophony of hoo-hawing and knee slapping at the great fable they recently foisted on the American people -- the story of simple George.

It turns out that the story of W's boyhood days in dusty, dull Midland -- just a-ridin' his bicycle to the Roy Rogers matinees and a-playin' street games with the other kids -- isn't the whole story.

George spent summers herding sheep on a Scottish farm.

Wouldn't you think that the spinners and shapers would weave this bit of color into his biography? Weren't there life lessons learned as he pulled a lamb from the slobbering jaws of a wolf? Or perhaps he determined to do great things while watching the clouds form over the heath? Couldn't he have learned the value of the green earth and hard work and couldn't they have really, really milked the images? Wasn't there a photo of him in his little herder's pants with a staff and a couple of lambs leaning against his sturdy legs and a chorus of "Brigadoon" in his heart?

Why was this fairly important and definitely colorful part of his past omitted?

A little web surfing brings a clue to us.

The sheep farm in Perthshire, Scotland, belonged to a James Gammell. "Jimmy" was Scotland's most connected elitist financier, and an early partner in Zapata Oil. Zapata Oil, readers may know, is the early aggressive venture of George Herbert Walker Bush and his cronies, and reported to have had CIA involvement. "Operation Zapata" was also the CIA's code name for intelligence operations against Cuba.

Little George's first visit to Perthshire occurred in the same year that Fidel Castro seized power -- 1959. George was 13, and he delighted in the acceptance the Gammell family gave him, and recently told a London Times reporter about being mistaken by Texas tourists for a local lad:

"I was assigned to take a sheep from one pasture to
another and this tour bus stops and they all get out
and this woman says: 'Oh, look at the little
Scottish boy,' in this Texas accent," Mr Bush said
with a broad grin. “Of course, I kept my mouth shut
and gave them a little Scottish boy wave."

Adorable!

Isn't that a parable for George's political rise? He's delighted about being mistaken for a Scottish sheepherder, when in truth he was a little rich kid mixing with other little rich kids on the farm of the man who did bidness on a level with kings and queens and potentates, and when in truth the whole history of the Bushes in America is one of cronyism and predatory elitism, if not outright graft.

(Incidentally, the son of the Gammell family, Bill, turns out to have gone to school in Edinburgh with Tony Blair. Perhaps Blair and Bush played Scottish boy on the farm and there's a deeper explanation to Bush's joke about toothpaste?)

To understand why omitting this episode is important for Bush, it's instructive to take a quick look at the crowd his family travels with. Here are just two paragraphs from a long and detailed review:

The Bush family ties to the Lairds and Lords of
Scotland and England

Lazard Brothers was controlled by officials in the
British government. It was always the investment
bank of David Rockefeller. And, besides Meyer and
Walker, George Bush's other large investor in Bush-
Overbey was British Assets Trust, Ltd., an
investment company whose directors interlocked with
the management of companies associated with Lord
Kindersley, such as Hudson's Bay Company. The
chairman of British Assets Trust in 1956 was J.G.S.
Gammell in Edinburgh, Scotland, and in 1985 by
J.C.R. Inglis, a partner in Shepherd & Wedderburn,
WS, an Edinburgh law firm. Inglis was also a
director of The Royal Bank of Scotland Group,
Scottish Provident Institution for Mutual Life
Assurance, Edinburgh American Assets Trust and
Atlantic Assets Trust, as well as chairman of
European Assets, N.V., Gammell also had served as
director of The Royal Bank of Scotland Group, as
did such other notables as The Right Hon. Lord
Balfour of Burleigh, The Right Hon. Lord Clydesmuir
and The Right Hon. Lord Polwarth. Polwarth,
incidentally, began serving as a director of the
Halliburton Company, parent of Brown & Root, in 1974.

The Bush family continued to amass its fortune and
power from the British and Scottish sources named
above, as these sources introduced their financial
tentacles into Texas, and as George H.W. Bush and
Barbara drove that old red Studebaker into Houston.

Hoop de la! Dizzying, isn't it?

All that's left for us is to wonder what else the Bushes are leaving out.

Has there ever been such a poseur?

40. There are CIA in its infancy connections here too
Edited on Sat Feb-19-05 08:44 AM by suegeo
I researched this topic many moons ago. I recall there was a big CIA station that Gammel was tied to.

Gammel Sr. was also some kind of Eisenhauer (sp?) suck up during the war. Prescott Bush Sr. played golf with Ike, golf is big in Scotland.

Now watch this drive.

In articles I was able to dig up, there was also something weird about Pat Robinson being involved with this Scottish deal too, but more along the lines of Pat Robinson being afraid of Scotland.

Notice the oil connection: Gammel Jr. runs an large oil / energy firm.

If I saved the articles, I'll repost based on better info than my faulty memory.

42. Bush Sr: "George returned home yesterday full of excitement"
God only knows what spooky shit he was doing in Scotland this time around.

Traditionally, Scotland seems to be a place that the Bush Family shakes down for money when needed, or just for the pleasure of shaking people down for money.

Also, in this linked article, pay special note to the comments that Poppy Bush made about the young chimp's trip to the sheep farm:

His (Gammel's) relationship with the new American President is stronger and goes back even further. He was six and George Bush Jnr was 13 when the two spent a summer together at the Gammell family's farm in Perthshire. The holiday was arranged by his father Jimmy, who died last year, and by George Bush Snr, who were close friends and business associates.

The late Mr Gammell, an Edinburgh financier, invested in Zapato Oil, the company that the former president set up in the Fifties. When his son returned to America, Mr Bush Snr noted: "George returned home yesterday full of excitement. The Gammells made him feel as though he was a member of the family."

44. I've always felt that if a shadow government existed, you'd find a
great many Scot families in the power structure. They're very stealthy and discrete. But it's also easy to hide your activities when you've got the power to create killdeers to distract the public.

57. Bush admits to being Woolite Drinker
After leaving Scotland, GWB admits to a excessive fondness to single malt whiskies and Woolite. W says that the three W's in his life (women, whisky, woolite) are what led him to needing to be boooorn again.

"I wasn't such a baaad govenor of Texas ewe no," Bush said shortly after being voted worst President Ever, "and Ewe can't Ram Kids down anyones throat, That's Jeff Gannons Job, ewe no. My job at the Sheep farm was just helping them over the fences"

Bush went back to Scotland and sitting in a pub lamenting to Jeff Gannon in an exclusive interview, "I made permanent the largest and only tax cuts for the rich in the history of the world during times of War, but does any one call me "George the tax slasher"? No. I have started a program to Save Social security benefits for millions of Americans, do people call me 'George savior of the elderly'? No. I started two maybe three wars, committed unscrupulous acts, lied cheated and stole my way through 2 terms and does anyone (except you Jeff) call me 'George savior of the Right'? No.

"But you Fuck one sheep... "

56. I don't think "farm" is exactly right. Try "estate"
No more accurate than "ranch" instead of "pig farm."

"Turns out that in 1959, 13-year-old George was dispatched to Perthshire to spend the summer with the Gammell clan on their estate in Glen Isla. The two families had been friends since the Gammells, who owned an investment bank in Edinburgh, became early investors in a fledgling oil business started by the elder George Bush."

These are snippets from a Lexis Nexis journey I took one day. I don't have electronic links to the articles anymore, just hard copies returned from the search.

The publication dates are listed in case you want to search for the articles yourself, which I suggest, because it is good reading.

I tried to add this to my earlier post, but it had timed out, sorry.

As we revealed, Jimmy Gammell, of Ivory & Sime, helped bankroll George Bush…when he stuck $50,000 into Zapata oil company and became a director….

But the link in the chain goes back to Lt. General Sir James Gammell (Jimmy’s pa) who was head of the British military mission in Moscow in 1945 when Averel Harriman was the Ambassador. Bush’s pa Prescott was at Yale with Averell, and worked for who else but Brown Brothers Harriman. It was them good ol’ boys who set up Bush with Gammell’s backing in Zapata oil company.

…Meanwhile, a former Ivory & Sime man tells us: “The joke in Charlotte Square was that we were the CIA’s station in Scotland.

Here’s the Pat Robertson connection
QUOTE
A protégé of Jimmy Gammell’s was a young man called Peter Burt, who got his first job at merchant bankers Edward Bates & Sons in Edinburgh in 1974. Today, Peter is heid (stet) honcho at the Bank of Scotland.

Peter Burt’s ill-fated dangerous liaison with fundamentalist Pat Robertson – the man who described Scotland as a “dark land” – came about through, where else, but the Scottish America rightwing network including president Bush.

HEADLINE: Our mutual friend: the secret Scots pal of Bush and Blair
BYLINE: Maurice Chittenden

QUOTE
As a boy, he cycled through the Perthshire countryside with George W. Bush and played basketball at public school with Tony Blair. Today, Bill Gammell, now chief executive of an oil and gas exploration company, is preparing to turn those childhood friendships into diplomacy.

His friendship with Bush stretches back more than 40 years and spans three generations of their families.

Lieutenant-General Sir James Gammell, the oilman’s grandfather, was chief of staff to Dwight Eisenhower when he was supreme allied commander at the end of the second world war…

Bill’s father, Jimmy Gammell, fought in the Grenadier Guards and left as a major to join the family firm, Ivory and Sime, an Edinburgh investment house. Ivory and Sime agreed to invest in a new oil company, Zapata Petroleum, that was being formed by George Bush…

QUOTE
His (Lieutenant-general Sir James Gammell) aunt’s husband was Eric Ivory, and seamlessly he (Sir James Gammell) became a partner in Ivory and Sime…

In 1951, Eric Ivory was lunching in New York with stockbrokers GH Walker. Over coffee, the senior partner, George “herbie” walker, told Ivory that he had been to school in England and whenever possible had traveled to Scotland in pursuit of his greatest love, golf. The game ran in the family blood to the extent that they gave their name (and money) for the Walker Cup amateur golf trophy. Herbie formed a strong bond with Ivory and suggested that he meet his nephew, naturally called George Herbie Walker Bush, who was trying to set up an oil company in Texas.
…..
INSERT ALL THE SORDID DETAILS ABOUT SETTING UP A FAKE OIL COMPANY HERE, INCLUDING ALL THE TEXAS BACKSTABBING AND CIA INTRIGUE THAT GOES ALONG UP SETTING UP BUSINESS AND A SPY SHOP IN TEXAS.

END QUOTE

The article continues, basically saying Jr. whored for Cairin oil in an investor’s video in 79 or 80. He boozed it up with Ian Rushbrook, a millionaire financier. Then the story describes how he failed in the oil business, got a DUI, was obnoxious to all his daddy’s friends, and basically fails at business and the love of his woman saves him. Blah blah blah.

84. I think "Bush" is a way sillier name than "Mungo" ...
Now that we've had a chance to see * in all his glory!

It's not unheard of in Scotland (just as names like "Declan" occur in Ireland but not as much in North America).

Apparently it means "gentle and kind" in one of the Gaelic dialects. (Yes, pairing that name with "Bush" would be an oxymoron, wouldn't it.)

I seem to recall that there was a famous explorer named Mungo Park. He didn't fare too well (died during one of his trips), but at least he was brave enough to go himself and not send other people out there to die instead.

71. For once, then something
No, it's not the teen-novel I'm speaking of. It's more about Mungo, the terrorist (big man, half beast, therefore who can only speak a few words at at time, not in sentences, played by Alex Karis ) in the movie "Blazing Saddles."

Thus, W should be renamed Mungo, but only after he's been chained in jail with nice people, like the sheriff in that movie.

76. And here's the "farm"
Picture is here (and it is lovely, if you like that sort of thing and I do).

Cost to rent 1000 pounds for two nights--in summer.
But really that's no more a "farm" than Gannon is a journalist. Whatever the weecowboy was doing, I sincerely doubt he was mucking about, i.e., doing anything that could be remotely construed as work, with sheep.

http://www.letsgothere.co.uk/lgtnet/cottages/property/a/UUN.aspx

Set on a magnificent Highland estate spanning 4500 acres with hills rising to 2500ft, these three properties are situated in the Cairngorm National Park with a wild flower reserve nearby, and an abundance of wildlife including red squirrels and huge herds of deer. Wester Brewlands , one of President G. Bush's childhood holiday homes, is a fine spacious detached Scottish house for discerning guests and families, elegantly furnished with care and attention with antiques and affording wonderful views to the front across the garden and down the glen.

77. And more about the "farm"
Formal garden with revolving summerhouse

Croquet lawn, table tennis

Toys, games, books and videos

Photographs of interior and exterior here
http://www.scottscastles.com/detail.php?id=20

20 Acres of gardens and grounds

Castle, garden and distillery tours

Pony trekking and riding (Balmoral estate)

Sleeps 14
3 Double Bedrooms
4 Twin Bedroom
1 Single Bedroom 6 Bathrooms (5 ensuite)

Price: Low season £2,100 per week Mid season £2,300 per week High season £2,600 per week

Like I said, that's no "farm" when it rents for that money without its acreage (rents with just one acre attached).

78. And yet more about "farm" including its (in)famous sheep
Brewlands Estate has a famous flock of pedigree black-face sheep and these often graze round the loch. At certain times of year they turn an astonishing shade of orange or pink depending on that year's fashionable colour for the show ring.

Estate and sheep pictures here.

http://www.holiday-houses-scotland.co.uk/garden.htm

And finally from the site--maybe it's all Scotland's fault--George developing a taste for booze, that is.

At the head of the loch rises Mount Blair, the glen's highest hill at over 2,500 feet. From the summit a mythical giant called 'Coille cam' threw the Glad Stane, an enormous boulder which lies on its own at the side of the road. This was reputedly because the people of the glen were disturbing the giant's sleep with too much mirth and dancing, probably as a result of their illicit whisky-making, for which the glen has long been famous.
