Florida Couple Once Praised for Parenting Now Accused of Torture
http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGBALM1MF5E.html

BEVERLY HILLS, Fla. (AP) - When John and Linda Dollar were seeking to adopt more children a decade ago, social workers regarded them as model parents - well-to-do, well-meaning folks who raised their five children with love.

"The Dollars love and want to help children. They feel the more children they have, the merrier they are," dazzled caseworkers wrote.

Now the couple stand accused of monstrous acts against five of their eight children, who told investigators they were starved, shocked with a cattle prod, beaten with a hammer and had toenails yanked out with pliers. Their emaciated bodies were compared by police to victims of Nazi concentration camps. snip

Well-educated and religious, the Dollars seemed to have the best of intentions in a 1995 state application to add to their brood of five adopted children by taking in three more.

"Adoption provided my wife and I the opportunity to extend our love to children we were not fortunate enough to have on our own," John Dollar said in the application. "We both found God sending us children who needed us and we needed them."

1. They'll soon be in jail. Two less Republican votes in Florida!
Couldn't they have been caught before the election?

14. We need to pound home the message that low tax states are
low service states. Child welfare is a state service. No one is watching for the children if there is no money to hire people to do so. Look to Texas for another example of this.

16. yea.
i suppose that if child welfare was watching for this, it wouldn't ever get this far. ugh.

since i have no children myself, i can only guess what i'd want to do to people like this...and lemme tell you, it ain't pretty.

instead of worrying about demolishing socsec, or warring with every nation in the middle east, maybe bush could do the right thing and look at this stuff...oh, sorry, no big corporations there.

fuckers.

5. I wonder did something change or was it all a show?
I know people who have large families and there IS more of everything and little stuff over the years seems to be more out of whack because of the dynamics of every interaction's potential to be multiplied.

Parents trying to be fully in control of a brood of 5 or 8 might resort to wild efforts to "make an example of" a child to use the group dynamic to make the others tow the line.

Realistically the parents of such a large family can't be entirely in control, so they have to gain cooperation, lead by example and such.

Still I could see parents snapping when that many children hit puberty and the teen years. You want your kids to be safe and live according to your values, but thier whole direction is to determine their own values and live life to the fullest.

19. I view these families as a form of "collectors"
We are starting to understand the psychology of people who collect cats or dogs or other animals and can't take care of them. I have long thought that these families that take in lots of kids are suspect. Five or six kids should be the maximum - no one couple should be caring for more children than that.

Clearly there is even more going on in this case, since overt cruelty is not usually the case, but these overlarge families depend on the older children taking care of the younger children and that puts too much responsibility on the shoulders of children who should still be playing house, not be little mothers and fathers.

22. I knew a guy who talked all caring about children but
he wanted to take kids away from their mothers because he hated women, and really wasn't thinking of the kids needs. He just liked to be admired by people who thought he really meant well. Also new a woman who wanted to take a girl away from her mother just because 'I'm better than she is" keep me far away from these guys.

9. They've been getting a lot of coverage
In the Tampa area, where they're from. Neighbors who lived on their street didn't even know they had kids. They were never allowed out of the house.

A married woman, who was in their care, when she was younger, and is now in college, was asked why she never reported the abuse. She said she thought it was normal.

They also lived in Tenn. for a while where they founded a Christian school.

10. Torture is NORMAL??
Sickos, all of them.
BTW does the married child have kids?
Would she torture them?
After all, she got through it.

So I hope they both get put into the general population (In Prison, that is), they will be taken care of.

But, I foresee a slap on the wrist, as children have NO RIGHTS AT ALL.
Torture, Kill, Molest a child and get off light.
Oh, thats only if "God" tells you to.
Bastards.

12. The Bush administration has normalized torture.
Along with the tortured torture arguments by the likes of Dershowitz. Chickens are coming home to roost, I guess. Maybe they will get a spot in the next Bush cabinet.

17. "We both found God sending us children...."
That statement alone ought to be a red flag for the caseworkers.... seems to me that there ought to be a prison cell waiting for them alongside the torturers.

23. The Dollars ran Christian school near Knoxville
KNOXVILLE — Before they were accused of torturing five children, John and Linda Dollar ran a private Christian school out of their home near Knoxville.

The Mountain View Christian School opened in fall 1999 in rural Strawberry Plains, about 15 miles east of Knoxville.

Paula Spradlin of Jefferson City had enrolled her 6-year-old son, Matthew, in the Dollars' school when it opened because she was attracted to the school's Christian curriculum.
...
''He loved it,'' she said, ''but there was just something that kept me from wanting him to go there anymore.''

Spradlin said she was worried about the Dollars' apocalyptic view of the Y2K scare.

''They were stocking up groceries and toiletries and generators. I just thought that was kind of strange. I could see buying a few extras like maybe for a week. But the way she was talking, they had stuff to last for several months,'' Spradlin said.

Rather than being a red flag, Regier's DCF may have given extra marks for that.
