National ID card on its way: Coderre
National ID card on its way: Coderre

By MARIA MCCLINTOCK, OTTAWA BUREAU

OTTAWA -- Canadians can expect a national ID card equipped with all the security bells and whistles -- including biometrics -- by 2005, Immigration Minister Denis Coderre says. In an exclusive interview with Sun Media, Coderre admitted while Canadians have historically been cautious about providing personal information for government use, they have become more security-conscious since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the U.S.

"If we don't have that debate, eventually it will be imposed (on us) because it will be international. We are a society that travels a lot, and people will ask some day for some specific recognition," Coderre said, adding an ID card has been discussed in cabinet.

"In the next five years you'll have, definitely, industrial countries where you will need those kind of devices."

snip.....

"They're looking at backing this up with a biometric feature, so that's a facial scan, and that certainly seems to be the way the Liberals are going."

2. It wouldn't be bad if the Government uses the info for Good!
But if they Use it for Bad purposes. Then Nobody would be able to escape there system except those they would let escape. It can be used to control a populace.

5. It'll never happen here in the US.
Too many people on the right are opposed to it.

The problem is this. You have no guarantee that dissent will never become criminalized. You have no guarantee that the government will always be benevolent.

What seems benign in the hands of a benevolent government can ultimately be a tool of oppression and totalitarianism.

NEVER give the government that much power over your life.

6. Don't be too sure it won't happen! Terrorists need to be caught!
A populace gets scared and give their liberties over so they can find these terrorists!

That this is being instituted all over the World is a bit terryfying!

Pretty soon everyone on this planet will be identified by the Computers! :bounce:

And Conservatives will do what they are told!

They are not very BRIGHT you know! :bounce:

7. Just slap a barcode on my forehead
and plant a chip in my heart -

I'll never have a national id card. They'll have to take me down totally, because I just won't do it. Period!

8. It would be easy
All they would have to do is to merge all of the driver's license databases into one.

Sure you could live off the grid, but you couldn't:

* Pay taxes;
* Drive;
* Get any sort of license, including marriage;
* Work;
* Open a bank account;
* Buy a house or securities;
* Etc.

Once you enterred the system in any of those ways or were arrested or something, you would have an ID issued in your name.

11. I AM NOT A NUMBER
I'm several numbers. I'm my SSN, DL#, Bank Account #, Employee ID, etc.

What makes this bad, for example, why would you need to show the grocery store your Social Security Number? Say you use a credit card, a company can track your shopping/spending based on that number. But you can change your credit card number, you can't easily change your SSN. So your whole life could be tracked by a single number... Now add in Job history, health records, video rentals, book purchases...

Unifying databases that are in control of private corporations without absolutely strong regulation is just asking for it.

13. 666
:evilgrin:He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead,so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name.

This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666.
