Schools gird to deal with budget losses in Bush plan

The Broward County School District will have to make up for a $47.2 million budget shortfall next year if it is financed according to Gov. Jeb Bush's education plan, Superintendent Frank Till said Tuesday.

Till received the estimate with School Board members at a retreat at Indian Ridge Middle School in Davie. The district's projected shortfall will likely change after the Legislature makes its decision about education funding during the general session in March, but Till already is bracing for a major hit.

"We're probably going to have to reallocate funds," Till said. "The board has always put a priority in trying not to have layoffs, and at this point we won't propose any. We don't want to scare anybody."

Florida steadily has siphoned off increases in spending for public schools in the past several years, Till said.
