Remains of 1,161 WTC victims will go unnamed
( I wish there was something we could do, this is sad)

The remains of 1,161 people who died at the World Trade Center will go unidentified, marking an end to a painful waiting period for families who had hoped for a different outcome. The medical examiner's office began making the dreaded calls three weeks ago, giving the families news that was not unexpected.

"We have exhausted our options," Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the medical examiner, said yesterday. "We extracted the DNA as best we could."
Forensic scientists familiar with the process of DNA analysis and the families were braced for the reality that the remains of 42 percent of the 2,749 reported missing would go unidentified. The rest of the missing victims' families will be at the mercy of future technological advances.

Borakove said the office has about three weeks of phone calls to make before sending out a letter to all the victims' families explaining that the office had reached the end of the line. Nonetheless, there was little to ease the pain of the families, many of whom had held out hope that new technology or testing methods might help in identifying the remains.

2. Your uncle. Now appearing in a pepsi bottle near you.
That is, as part of the bottle.

Perhaps if they weren't so damn quick to sell off as much raw materials to foreign recycling operations they'd have more of a chance.

Still, if the people haven't shown up by now, they're history regardless of 'identification' .

3. Does it really matter?
They are dead. Just cover up the hole and move on. It's been over 3 years.

5. The whole 9/11 thing does make Your President look bad.
I'm sure you'd like everybody to let the matter drop.

6. may never be found
and yet there was that passport on the ground. Are there any remains of the victims on the planes? This was a crime scene and should have been handled as such. A very sad and insufficient end. But Matt Lauer was moonlighting as a garbage collector. Where is our press? Why haven't we seen a report on the 154 programs being cut in the * budget proposal? There are literally hundreds of more important stories out there that demand investigative reporting and are not being covered. I could not believe "Today" today showing the video tape of a soldier killed in Iraq saying it was worth it. Did anyone else see that?

7. Forensic team ends 9/11 efforts
BBC

Forensic experts have ended efforts to identify the remains of nearly half of those killed in the World Trade Center attacks of September 2001.

New York's Medical Examiner's office has so far identified the remains of 1,585 of the 2,749 victims who died.

But of the almost 20,000 specimens retrieved from the site, some 10,000 have yielded only partial or no DNA.

The remains will be kept in a memorial amid hopes that future forensic science will make identification possible.

9. Ground Zero Forensics Effort Ends in NYC
NEW YORK (AP) - A year after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Ronald Fazio's family held a wake with a coffin full of keepsakes, knowing his remains might never be found in the rubble of the World Trade Center.

Their fears have proved true.

The medical examiner's office says it has exhausted all efforts to identify the remains of those killed at the trade center, confirming the heartbreaking truth for the many families who wanted something to bury.

In the 3 years since the attacks, forensic scientists have identified the remains of nearly 1,600 of the dead. But the families are now being told that the limits of DNA technology have been reached, leaving more than 1,100 of the victims unidentified.

10. This reminds me of when they melted down the beams from the WTC
instead of running forensic tests on them.
