Row over Springer opera donation (prevented by 'Christians')
Edited on Wed Feb-23-05 09:25 AM by muriel_volestrangler
A cancer charity has refused a donation from Jerry Springer - The Opera after a religious group threatened to protest.

Maggie's Centres said Christian Voice's contact prompted it to reject £3,000.
...
The show's star, David Soul, accused the religious group of "strong-arm tactics" and blackmail - adding cancer was not just a Christian problem.
...
He admitted his group threatened to protest outside the cancer charities' offices had they accepted the donation.

Arrggh! Intolerant 'Christian' groups are spreading to Britain. What a bunch of wankers - their ideas of decorum are more important than helping cancer patients?

Luckily, the real Christians are making clear their opposition to the evil "Christian Voice":

However Jonathan Bartley from the Christian thinktank Ekklesia expressed dismay at the actions of Christian Voice.

"It is a terrible irony that campaigners against blasphemy have distorted the Christian message through their actions in this way" he commented.

"Whatever your views about 'Jerry Springer: The Opera', this is not the way to go about making your case."

"Christian Voice claim to be defending the Jesus portrayed in the gospels. But that Jesus emphasised compassion over religiosity."

Cancer patients obviously don't matter to these folks.

Pity.

2. Is the show's star, David Soul, the David Soul of Starkey & Hutch?
I know that Soul is a singer because he put out a soft pop record in the mid 1970s.

6. Yes; he's now a British citizen
because he likes living in Britain. He actually is the one non-singing part in the opera.

He is also an opponent of Bush:

British citizenship does not mean that I am cutting my ties with America. My children and my ageing parents still live in the States, so I'll be visiting them, and I will be voting in the US presidential election next month (if my vote actually gets counted). God help us if George Bush is re-elected. Still, my choice is to belong here, and in that belonging, I rejoice. Finally.

3. That's very narrow minded.
Don't they know what Jerry Falwell's philosophy is in accepting donations? Here is a quote from him after he accepted a very large donation from Rev. Moon's Unification Church.

“If the Unificationists, the American Atheist Society, or Bill Clinton himself ever send an unrestricted gift to any of my ministries, be assured I will operate on evangelist Billy Sunday’s philosophy of: ‘The Devil’s had it long enough’ ... and quickly cash the check!”
