Feisty Biden toying with run for president
6-term senator on CA swing to gauge interest

Outspoken Democratic Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware confirmed Wednesday that he is seriously testing the waters for a 2008 presidential run -- even as he acknowledged that Sen. Hillary Clinton would be "the overwhelming, prohibitive favorite'' to become the nominee of his party.

"I'm sounding it out,'' said Biden, 62, during an interview with The Chronicle editorial board. "In all my career, there's more at stake than any time since I've been a senator ... (and) I have some pretty clear ideas about what I think should be done.''

But Biden acknowledged that his reputation as a blunt, plain-spoken critic on foreign affairs issues -- on display recently during his confirmation hearing grilling of Condoleezza Rice -- could affect his chances. "I just don't know, very honestly, whether the Democratic Party is ready for me ... (and) would be comfortable with me as the nominee.''

Still, the six-term senator -- first elected in 1972 -- noted ironically that with the list of Democrats being talked about for the next White House run, including such names as 2004 candidate John Kerry, former vice presidential candidate John Edwards and 2000 presidential candidate Al Gore, "the attractive thing is that, in a primary -- I'm the new guy.''

2. I would support him! The only problem I have is that he's been in
the Senate for sooo long! I can just imagin all the distortions of a 30+ years voting record! As to his being plain spoken...that's Joe's primary attraction. I think that was also the main attraction of McCain, Dean, and even Shrub! Both parties find that trait a very positive thing!!!

7. Can someone please explain to me
the comment,"he acknowledged that Sen. Hillary Clinton would be "the overwhelming, prohibitive favorite'' to become the nominee of his party."

Rather, why she should be? I understand there alot of people who really like her, but I simply don't see why she should be the one. I know too many Dems who don't like her and feel that there is NO WAY that people would vote for her. Does she have some magical trump card up her sleeve to make her suddenly loveable to the public, or what am I missing? I really don't get it.

10. I couldn't agree more
I like Hillary, but as soon as we accept the cold hard truth that the American public will not go for her the sooner we can get about to the business of finding a decent candidate that can win.
She needs to stay in the Senate. We need every vote there.

22. EXACTAMUNDO!
No matter how much you like Hillary (and I DO), we can't afford to let the Repugs distract us with her in '08. Their fondest dream is that we nominate her, because they know middle America will never vote for her--no matter what polls in NY say. Think about it--if they beat the hell out of Kerry, a purple heart war veteran, on matters of security and being tough enough, what do you think they'll do to Hillary? It is NOT the time to test the waters with a woman--I can say that because I am a woman! We need to realize that Hillary is NOT Bill Clinton.
We need to coalesce around a couple of really, really good candidates. No more 9 people side shows for the MSM and Repugs to poke fun at. We need to be thinking about who we have that can beat someone like McCain. And it certainly won't be some two-faced clown like Biden!

12. It's A Setup For the SCLM's Coverage Of The 08' Elections.
See, they build her up and build her up and build her up. Then when she's not quite as popular as expected or does something unbecoming of a candidate, (see: Howard Dean) they can drop her so far that she ends up in China. It's all about the drama.

13. The problem I have with Biden
Edited on Thu Feb-24-05 10:23 AM by olafvikingr
is that he appears to be just that, talk. Where is he when we need more than strong rhetoric.

Condoleeza...yes vote.
Gannon....<crickets>.

He talked tough on Bill Mahers show the other night though, SOUNDED real good.

I'd vote for Gore, Dean, or Kerry over him...in that order.

14. Biden will not sign the letter for inquiry of Gannon. Kerry signed it.
That tells me all I need to know about Biden. Despite his posturing on the Bill Maher show, when it comes to putting his signature where his mouth is, suddenly "the voice is silent."

Biden is already calculating, with too much precision, what moves will benefit and what moves will not, and whether it's the right thing to do or not, well, that doesn't seem to be part of his mental equation.

25. Public Relations Class 101: Never call someone a liar
Edited on Thu Feb-24-05 11:26 AM by IanDB1
You use words like, "The President hasn't been truthful with the American people. The President is continuing to mislead the American people."

On the other hand, "Joe Sixpack" doesn't grasp the subtlety. Maybe it is time for someone who will plainly and clearly say something like, "I voted to give the President authorization to use force against Iraq because the President lied to me-- as he lied to Congress, as he lied to America-- about the reasons for doing so."

Maybe you're right. Maybe it is time to call a lie and lie and a liar a liar.

"You're damned right I'm impugning your honesty, Dr. Rice. I am calling you a liar because you have lied and you continue to lie and your lies have been used to justify a war based upon lies. I am impugning your honesty, I am impugning your character, and I am impugning your patriotism. But I am proud that an African-American who was barely wealthy enough to afford her own Grand Piano as a child has struggled up from the ghetto to put her ugly buck-toothed face in The White House."

They will drop the Neil Kinnock hammer on him big time. Jeb will tear him to shreds.

Plus, why would I want to vote for this guy, anyway? He's nothing but a camera-chaser and is bought and paid for by the insurance industry.
