Feds Restore 'Gay' Language to Workshop

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The words ``gay,'' ``lesbian,'' ``bisexual'' and ``transgender'' are being restored to the title of a government-sponsored workshop on suicide after a federal health agency was bombarded with e-mail protests over their removal.

The local organizers of the panel discussion said they had been warned that if they did not change the title, the workshop might be canceled by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, which is funding it.

So Bloodworth and his colleagues changed the title from ``Suicide Prevention Among Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender Individuals'' to ``Suicide Prevention in Vulnerable Populations.''

Flooded with hundreds of e-mailed protests from Oregon mental health advocates, the federal agency this week told the organizers they could revert to the original wording.

I think you make an interesting point and I don't want to see your post deleted..

It obviously wasn't directed at the people who wanted to change the title back - it was directed at those who made the change in the first place.

I think you are intelligent enough to get that but you simply want to rant and rave at the shadows. Well, if it makes you feel better go right ahead.

There are places where humor is inappropriate. I don't expect you to understand, and for your sake, I hope you never do. I hope nobody else ever has to feel like this. I hope you never get to the point where you honestly wouldn't mind being hit by a truck because it has gotten too damned hard to live in this society because of your gender and sexuality, and I certainly hope that if you do, you don't go to a place that is supposed to be tolerant and kind and instead find a jerk like yourself making jokes in a thread about a suicide prevention conference.

The Guardian story focuses on the name change and what the story was about. The WaPo story emphasizes "venom" from people calling them Nazis. Why doesn't this surprise me?

I was NOT surprised that it happened in the first place. I'm very surprised that people in Oregon were able to get this turned around and reverted back to the original wording.
