It's been a long haul since Enron's 2001 spiral into bankruptcy, and it'll be 2006 before the company's former top brass will stand trial on criminal charges.

U.S. District Judge Sim Lake on Thursday ordered that jury selection for ex-Chairman Ken Lay and ex-CEO Jeff Skilling begin Jan. 17. He had been considering starting the trial this summer.

But Lake said he pushed the case into next year to accommodate the trial schedules of the multiple top-flight lawyers involved.

"All these good lawyers are fully employed," the judge joked. "I appreciate you giving me the time of day."

2. Well, as long as Kenny boy's high-flying lawyers aren't inconvenienced
I'll be their schedules would get cleared in a big effin' hurry if Lay was in the slammer instead of free on bail (that is, if any bail was required).

3. I've said it before, I'll say it agin.
These guys should be treated with the same amount of respect that the law shows a mugger or pickpocket.
A quick trial (when evidence is still fresh), a public defender and an unsympathetic judge.

Probably a show trial . . . and then they will be quietly pardoned.

Just a guess.
