NYT: Author Says Tapes Are With Bush's Counsel
WASHINGTON, Feb. 28 - Doug Wead, the author and former campaign adviser who taped conversations with President Bush when Mr. Bush was governor of Texas, said Monday that he had given the tapes to "the president's counsel."

After drawing criticism for his secret taping of Mr. Bush as Mr. Bush was beginning to move onto the national political stage and for his disclosure of a dozen conversations to a reporter for The New York Times, Mr. Wead said last week that he would return the tapes.

He said then that he had felt stung by critics' assertions that he had disclosed the tapes to help publicize his recently published book about presidential childhoods, "The Raising of a President," which quotes briefly from the tapes. He said he had made the tapes public only in the interest of history. To counter accusations that he wanted to profit from book sales, he said he had directed his literary agent to assign all future royalties to a charity, Convoy of Hope, for its work with tsunami victims.

8. Running?
bush probably gave him a million bucks to "release" those tapes.

"I wouldn't answer the marijuana question. You know why? Cause I don't want some little kid doing what I tried. You gotta understand -- I want to be president. I want to lead. Do you want your little kid to say, 'hey Daddy, President Bush tried marijuana, I think I will.'"

Does that quote make Bush look bad? Nope...It shows him as a "compassionate conservative".

7. Doug Wead invented "Compassionate Conservatism"...
In fact, Wead is credited with being one of those who inspired dubya to run for office. This snippet is from a 2003 article:

<snip>
The catchphrase of his presidential campaign, 'Compassionate Conservatism', was seen to be a gesture to the political centre, but was in fact coined by a firebrand evangelist with the Assembly of God called Doug Wead whom Bush met in 1988, campaigning for his father. Wead had been asked to fend off challenges to Bush senior from the Christian Right, and counselled: 'Do whatever for the evangelicals.'

Bush was the obvious - if sometimes apparently unlikely - figurehead to take his family and party back to the White House. He was duly presented to the nation by the fund-raising machine on his father's Rolodex, the network on his mother's so-called 'Christmas card list', Karl Rove's genius and Dick Cheney's guiding hand. But privately, Bush took counsel from people such as Dallas evangelist Tony Evans, who recalls: 'One of the impetuses for his considering running for President was biblical teaching. He feels God is talking to him.'

4. Puhleeze...
...Wead is "one of them". The non-story tapes were just a calculated diversionary tactic.

14. White House gets tapes of Bush "marijuana" chat
Edited on Tue Mar-01-05 11:49 AM by NNN0LHI

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An author who secretly taped conversations in which George W. Bush indicated he had used marijuana has turned the tapes over to the president's private counsel, the White House says.

The White House was irritated last month when Doug Wead released portions of his recorded conversations with Bush from 1998 to 2000, when Bush was governor of Texas and planning his White House run. snip

The conversations also included talk of the use of marijuana. "I wouldn't answer the marijuana question. You know why? Because I don't want some little kid doing what I tried," Bush says on one tape. snip

White House spokesman Scott McClellan said the tapes were in the hands of the president's "private counsel."

19. Now that Bush and his minions have admitted that the tapes are genuine...
...I hope this guy now releases copies of ALL the tapes. Even the ones where Bush was too high to remember what said to this guy years ago. Wouldn't that be a hoot?

Don
