Ex-Beatle's Wife Calls for Pet Fur Trade Ban

"I became aware of this (trade) only four months ago," she told a news conference in Brussels at the European Parliament.
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20050301/en_nm/eu_animal_fur_dc

"It was a big shock to myself and my family considering my husband and his late wife Linda were involved in animal rights ... and none of them knew about the dog and cat fur exports from China and the fact that Europe (is) importing it."

Animal rights activists estimate that 2 million cats and dogs are killed in Asia each year for their fur which is imported into Europe under false labels, saying it either fake fur or exotic Asian species, to make soft toys, blankets, coats and fur trims on hoods.

"It's barbaric that this is still going on," said Mills. "It's more disgusting that the fashion industry where a lot of people are actually aware of it buy this because they know it's cheaper than using the fox, mink and sable that is labeled."

omg... I had no idea about this type of fur trade! Disgusting... :puke:

2. I agreee... Fur is not a Fabric!
I just had no idea people used cats and dogs and passed them off as exotic animal furs.

9. I bought a coat in China
It was fur, it was cheap, we were headed north, and it was so damn cold, I needed something warm.

It was great. I got lots of compliments on it, especially from teenage girls (it was long, all the way to the floor).

And then I got caught in a snowstorm.

Wet dog.

I had been wearing dog.

Arf.

no matter how many different ways you prepare it, dog always tastes a little gamey to me.

Care to spew again? Be my guest.

3. I agree about the fur trade thingie
but find the title of this article quite interesting. The way it was phrased, I thought they were referring to Patti Boyd.

Quite surprised to see the press has no love for Mrs. Sir P McC. Perhaps some truth to the stories that his children with Linda are not fond of Heather. I think she's rather a ditz, but then again, an older gentleman who has earned it should be able to enjoy what he wants to enjoy.

4. Some day I hope to own a sable coat
I eat meat, I wear leather, I don't see any difference between that and wearing fur. The first one of you that throws red paint or blood on it is going to court. I'll file assualt charges and a civil suit for damages.

I do not want to wear a coat made of puppy or kitty fur, however. I love my own pets too much. Sables, minks and chinchillas are rats and weasels with pretty coats. That makes them fair game for fur. If a rat (or mouse) or weasel comes into my house from the wild, I'll kill it with no qualms, if my cat or dog doesn't get it first. It's the circle of life.

Synthetic material works better than fur anyway. I'm amazed that people wear dead animals as a status symbol.

27. Sorry, why should cats and dogs be in a different category -
in this regard? Seriously, try justifying this way of thinking to people who own rats, ferrets, chinchillas, etc. They are very affectionate animals.

30. If people ate sable, that would be a different story
My opinion: if humans eat the animal the fur came from, then wearing the fur is okay. I note that not too many people complain about sheepskin, and it's a kind of fur.

I used to have a pair of rabbit-skin gloves. They were very nice, and I had no qualms about wearing them because not only did I eat rabbit at the time, I ate the rabbits those gloves were made from. And they were good, too.

But killing an animal, taking the pelt and throwing the rest over in the corner to rot? Or as bad, grinding it up and feeding it to other fur animals? That's just wrong on so many levels.

7. Isn't the Ex-Beatle's wife going over the top?
Edited on Tue Mar-01-05 02:43 PM by Karmadillo
I mean, uh, like, this is crazy, right? I mean, she's telling us we can't wear dog and cat fur. I mean, after all, I'm a liberal, that's for sure, but what kind of lunacy do we have here? This is like that crazy PETA stuff that turns so many people off. If we, like, keep pushing animal rights, and let me tell you I'm a big supporter of animal rights, really big, huge, in fact, but if we keep pushing them to these extremes, we're going to hurt all animals in the, uh, long run. But I'm a liberal, honest, it's just that we would serve animals better if we, uh, kept our mouths shut and did absolutely nothing, right? Anyone, by the way, hear that one about PETA standing for People Eating Tasty Animals? Hysterical. I die laughing. But wait! How about People Eating Tasty Airedales! Whoa! That's funny. But I do care. Honest. I just think there are better ways of dealing with the problem than bringing it to light.

8. Yeah, yeah, yeah
Remember what vociferous and adamant vegetarians Paul and Linda McCartney were? Oh, my, she even wrote vegetarian cookbooks and put out a line of frozen vegetarian entrees (which are still being marketed, and which still suck).

But, when Linda was diagnosed with breast cancer, they were very quiet about her treatment, and, afterwards, her husband acknowledged that they'd unhesitatingly availed themselves of all the must current cancer treatments - THE KIND THAT WERE TESTED ON ANIMALS.

Everyone can preach, but when it's your ox that's being gored, you better shut the hell up.

Besides, airedales are stringy. You'll want a nice spaniel for roasting. Rub it with garlic first, though.

Bozos.

14. In my opinion
She should have had a med alert bracelet saying that she can not be treated with anything that has been tested on animals.

I went to a Paul McCartney concert and was appalled by the 20 minute film of animals being tortured, electrocuted, etc. That is not why I went to the concert. I'm aware of those awful things but I don't like for them to be slammed in my face.

21. No, no, no
You didn't get what I wrote.

She CHOSE that form of treatment when she found out she had cancer. That was the hypocrisy of their stance - that, when the chips were down, she didn't give a shit about animal rights, or what had been tested on animals. She just wanted what she wanted.

Flaming bozos, both of them. Sounds like he's married another doozy.

I'm with you about exploiting an audience with that kind of message when the audience is paying top $$$ for tickets.

10. The entire fur trade is disgusting, if you ask me
Perhaps some would not agree, but I do see a distinction between raising and killing an animal for food and raising and killing it solely for its coat. That to me is a pure waste and a senseless vanity. We need food and though it could be argued that we don't necessarily NEED meat, people are omniverous creatures.

We don't NEED fur coats - there are plenty of alternatives and I find the practice of wearing fur repugnant. No, I won't throw paint on you if you wear a fur coat but I'm not going to have any desire to know you better.

I didn't like Jennifer Lopez to begin with - when I saw pictures of her new clothing line which features a great deal of fur, I liked her even less.

Really, a coat made of a dog wouldn't offend me any more than one of sable.

12. It's not like I have the money to buy one, but if I was rich, I would
I really don't have a problem with fur, as I don't consider wearing a fur coat any different from wearing a leather one. I'm sure they torture cows, too, at "Bovine University".

I don't classify rodents and weasels the same way I classify dogs and cats. Most people don't. That's why D-Con is still in business.

I'll bet those yetis are warm when it's -20 degrees out.

If I had $25,000 to spare with my current income, I wouldn't be spending it on a fur coat, anyways. I'd be paying cash for a car and would pay off part of my mortgage with what was left. I'm just saying if I won the Mega Millions or something, I'd get one.

24. Good for her!
Paul's last wife who went through hell and died from breast cancer was big on animal rights, too. She even talked Paul into being a vegetarian.
I see no reason to have fur. I see red when I see someone wearing fur.
Unless you're an Alaskan or Native American who uses ALL of the animal and have been doing it for centuries, no one else should be farming animals for fur or trapping them.

The fact that they use cats and dogs is disgusting. I remember reading about it a few years ago but I didn't realize it was so big. Kudos for her raising awareness of this brutality.
