Pakistan to get U.S. planes this year

Big News Network.com Thursday 3rd March, 2005 (UPI)

The United States will supply two P-3 Orion surveillance planes to Pakistan this year, Pakistani news media reported Wednesday.

The report, published in several Pakistani newspapers, said Washington will send six more such planes to Pakistan next year.

The eight P-3 Orion planes are part of a $1.2 billion arms package the United States offered to Pakistan late last year in return for its support to the U.S.-led war against terror

President George W. Bush has once again waived democracy-related restrictions on Pakistan, enabling the country to continue to receive U.S. assistance.

In a recent waiver, Bush certified that Pakistan qualified for exemption from provisions of the Foreign Operations, Export Financing, and Related Programs Appropriations Act 2005.

This recently promulgated act prohibits direct U.S. assistance to a country where an elected head of government was deposed by decree or military coup.

In the waiver notification, Bush observed that lifting the restriction 'would facilitate the transition to democratic rule in Pakistan; and is important to United States efforts to respond to, deter, or prevent acts of international terrorism.'

2. Not exactly surprising
I'm shocked he even talked about it. Now, let's hear him talk about Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Egypt and the other countries he supports that are not democratic at all (not to mention his own personal occupation and puppet government...make that two puppet governments), shall we?
