Gannongate Swinging Open? New Move in Congress for Info

By E&P Staff

Published: March 03, 2005 5:00 PM ET

NEW YORK Gannongate may be opening a little wider soon.

For two weeks, several Democratic members of Congress have pressed the White House, the Secret Service, the Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security for information about just how GOPUSA/Talon News reporter James Guckert was able to attend briefings and presidential press conferences for two years under the alias James Gannon, on behalf of an openly partisan organization. Guckert has also been linked to sex sites and a male escort operation.

Today, ranking members for House committees on Rules, Judiciary, Government Reform, Homeland Security and Ways and Means submitted a Resolution of Inquiry, which would require the Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security to turn over all documentation regarding Guckert's access to the White House day after day for two years.

"We cannot allow the White House to stonewall the United States Congress and the American people on an issue of such importance,” said Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY). “Every day more questions are raised and so far, the White House is not providing any answers. We intend to find out what the White House is hiding."

mods: i realize this one is close to 12 hours old, but i could not find it posted anywhere else and it seems important.

22. bush/cheney favs: exec privilege/national security
how convenient is that? and yesterday, just to ramp up more fear among those who actually hang on bush's absurd and hostile utterances, he's brought Osama back again...when too many questions start being asked and the sheeple may entertain a 'moment of suspicion and doubt' - out comes Osama.

2. Can't happen soon enough
I saw that squirrel Rove on CNBC yesterday talking to Kudlow. And the chimp is going on a SS charm offensive for the next sixty days. Anticipate a whole lot of smoke and mirrors while they try to make this all "blow over" as it were....and if that fails, they'll invade a country and demand that we all be patriotic by shutting up, supporting the invasion (no doubt one for even more oil) and sending our children to die...!

"Framing" the discussion, controlling exposure, spinning the news - that's the day-2-day of this Administration. Just look at all those campaign events, in which the audience was required to sign oaths of fealty, err.. loyalty - that was all about controlling exposure.

The Gannon thing is just another example of how low this Whitehouse will stoop in order to control the exposure, spin the news, and frame the discussion to their advantage. So they went and bought a heapin-helping of some thoughtful "journalism" to hype their agenda - very much like placing shills in the crowd at the revival show to help work the crowd into a frenzy, and then shake 'em down.

THAT'S what this Whitehouse is hiding.

8. E & P is all over the "Gannon" story. Good for them
They are a trade magazine, covering the story of how the trade in general has not covered the story.

But methinks those days are about over...

The "Gannon" White House Gay Prostitute story stinks, and every reporter in the White House knows it.

Inside The 'Gannon' Case: How Blogs Broke It Wide Open

By Greg Mitchell

Published: March 01, 2005

The Jeff Gannon affair has not yet morphed into a full-fledged political scandal, or retreated to the realm of embarrassing footnote, so this may be a good time to pause and reflect. At the center of the controversy: A man with no journalistic (but plenty of sex-site) experience who managed to cover the White House at close range for two years for an obscure online site called Talon News — under an alias — with the avowed aim of simply presenting the administration's case, unfiltered.

Whatever the merits of the uproar over this episode, it has proved extremely instructive for me, making possible my first immersion in the new world of blog-generated controversy.

13. Jeff Gannon's inner child?

Thanks to "nonny" at Democratic Underground for the above composite of Johnny Gosch and James Guckert/Jeff Gannon. Though the photos' perspectives differ, and it's proof of nothing, the alignment of features is striking.

14. Thanks for posting these again
I spent a lot of time rereading the threads last night and searching for the photos. There was another one of his mother, Noreen, which also bears striking similarities, especially in coloring. But what we really need is a pic of Johnny Gosch's father at the time of the kidnapping, when he would have been close to Gannon/Guckert's age now.

21. I must have missed this one. Thanks!
Look at the eyebrows, the shape of the eyes on both sides, the overhanging lids, and the cheekbones. I had been wondering why the father was not part of the later story. There was a strange reference in her long article about the kidnapping that mentioned the father picking up the phone and then not going with Johnny to deliver the papers, but nothing more was said about it. I will go back and read what Noreen said last night.

This story strikes very close to home for me, because my mother was a newspaper publisher who would never let her sons deliver papers--this was back in the 60s and 70s. And my father was an attorney/computer systems designer who worked for the CIA and was also a pedophile registered sex offender who went through many changes of identity, all supported by his government and corporate (IBM, Burroughs, etc.) connections. In the 80s, he was working in Langley. He was found dead in his Florida home a year ago last November, apparently having died in August. But the investigation was slammed shut and I have been having these strong DING! DING! DING! moments with this story of Gannon/Guckert/Gosch. I don't know what the truth is, but I do know that there were dark things going on through those years.

16. SOMETHING has to come of this...
I'm glad he's still blabbing like a school girl on his site, he hasn't dropped away to obscurity like one would think would make sense. All the more of an outrage, it will be easier to subpoena him.
