Nevada Lawmaker Defends $3,000-a-Month Consulting Contract With TV Station

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - A state senator is defending her $3,000-a-month contract to consult with a television station on news content, including issues in the Legislature.

Sen. Barbara Cegavske, R-Las Vegas, said this week during a joint budget committee hearing that she works for Sunbelt Communications, which owns KVBC of Las Vegas. She said she has worked with the station about a year and helps with stories about education, health care and, sometimes, the Nevada Legislature.

"I'm a consultant," she told the Las Vegas Sun in an article published Friday. "They'll call me about different issues, ask me questions about health or education issues."

Al Tompkins, a television consultant and faculty member at the Poynter Institute, an independent think tank for journalists, said he had never heard of a legislator contracting with a news outlet while in office.

1. WTF?
Hello. Isn't this against some rule? Anybody?
$3,000/month just to answer a few questions over the phone? Right.

5. Dem getting paid equal pay?
Excellent question. Guess the media is unable to read, like legislation, gotta pay extra for that complicated info.

3. Hey she probably figured it was fair game if the white house had a
prostitute posing as a journalist working for them, then she probably thought "anything goes". Bush has direct responsibility on this one.

6. Isn't answering questions from the media or constituents...
...part of job description of a legislator? If not, then we'll have to Paypal or 900-number or whatever to find our where our legislator stands on the issues.

"Rep. Whoizit will be happy to share her views on gun control legislation. Enter your credit card number at the prompt and select from the available list of topics."

Good Republican thinking. Only a goldurn commie would expect legislators to give away this valuable information for free!

8. Wonder what TV station related legislation has come up in the Nevada
State Senate? Of course the $3000/month won't affect the way she votes...

9. Kick! Now Bush doesn't have to hire journalists--just let
the GOP Congress be his media whores. Actually, paying sources for news stories violates journalism ethics as well. Reputable media outlets won't do this. But of course the reputable media co's have long since sold out to corporate whoremongers.

12. If she's being a culsultant for a TV station
she needs to resign her position in the Legislature.

Or her position as a consultant.

One of the two.
