Lawmaker Asks Bush to Seek OPEC Oil Price Cut
snip>
When Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon asked Bodman why he had not telephoned OPEC ministers to lobby them to lower energy prices, the secretary responded: "I have a lot on my plate."

Wyden did not like that answer and took his dissatisfaction with Bodman's job performance in dealing with OPEC to the secretary's boss -- President Bush.

In a letter sent Friday to the president, Wyden said high oil prices should be a concern for the administration and he asked Bush to "personally use your capital" to convince OPEC to lower crude prices.

"With oil prices now approaching the highest levels ever and experts predicting the price could rise above $60 per barrel, I urge you in the strongest terms possible to ... convince OPEC leaders to increase oil supply and bring down oil prices," Wyden said in his letter to Bush.

1. Remember the 2000 campaign?
Bush was criticizing the Clinton Administration for not lobbying OPEC enough when oil prices were 36$ a barrel.

Bush Would Use Power of Persuasion to Raise Oil Supply
By KATHARINE Q. SEELYE

WAYNE, Mich., June 27, 2000 -- Gov. George W. Bush of Texas said today that if he was president, he would bring down gasoline prices through sheer force of personality, by creating enough political good will with oil-producing nations that they would increase their supply of crude.

"I would work with our friends in OPEC to convince them to open up the spigot, to increase the supply," Mr. Bush, the presumptive Republican candidate for president, told reporters here today. "Use the capital that my administration will earn, with the Kuwaitis or the Saudis, and convince them to open up the spigot."

6. Opec isn't foolish, they have to raise prices when the dollar falls
As the value of the dollar goes down, Opec has to raise prices to compensate for diminished value of the dollar

In other words....The HIGH OIL PRICE IS GEORGE BUSH'S FAULT. The dollar is falling because of the deficit that was caused by tax cuts for the rich. The trade deficit is also an issue.

Of course, you won't hear republicans blaming their own for the catastrophe that is the US economy!!

9. Exactly! Why spoil all the fun for the Exxon investors

So if it costs $20/week more for every American to drive, well, that's the price we have to pay to keep Wall Street happy.

3. Time to "jawbone"?
MANCHESTER, New Hampshire, Jan 27 (AFP) - Republican presidential hopeful George W. Bush said in a debate here late Wednesday that the United States should move away from its dependency on imported oil.
"Our country better become less dependent on foreign crude," Bush said during the last Republican debate before a pivotal primary vote here next week.

"What I think the president ought to do is he ought to get on the phone with the OPEC cartel and say we expect you to open your spigots," the Texas governor said when questioned about rising fuel oil prices as cold weather gripped the state.

"OPEC has gotten its supply act together and it's driving the price like it did in the past. The president of the United States must jawbone OPEC members to lower the price," he insisted.

4. This just in...
OPEC laughs in Bush's face and says that even they wanted to lower the prices, they can't. If he thinks he is so High and Mighty, why doesn't he just wave a magic wand in increase the reserves?

5. Tell them the spigot joke, george!
Bush said today that he would bring down gasoline prices by creating enough political good will with oil-producing nations that they would increase their supply of crude. “I would work with our friends in OPEC to convince them to open up the spigot, to increase the supply. Use the capital that my administration will earn, with the Kuwaitis or the Saudis, and convince them to open up the spigot.” Implicit in his comments was a criticism of the Clinton administration as failing to take advantage of the good will that the US built with Kuwait and Saudi Arabia during the Persian Gulf war in 1991. Also implicit was that as the son of the president who built the coalition that drove the Iraqis out of Kuwait, Mr. Bush would be able to establish ties on a personal level that would persuade oil-producing nations that they owed the US something in return.

7. So, this Bodman works "hard," huh? Got a lot on his plate?
Edited on Fri Mar-04-05 07:20 PM by Kimber Scott
Sounds a lot like, "Let them eat cake."

Now they're going to mess up. You see most Americans don't care if the government sends somebody else's kids to die while trying to blow up somebody else's kids, moms, dads, dogs, sisters, infrastructure, etc., but they care a whole lot when you mess with their money. So, Mr. Bush, et al, go ahead get flippant about our money. Not fake money. Not social security money, or tax for the rich money - money we have to spend on gas to get to a job that pays less, (and offers no insurance), than the one we had five years ago which leaves less money to pay for the $4.00 fucking loaf of bread on the god-damned corporate grocery shelf!

Got a lot on your plate, Mr. Bodman? Just wait. Just wait.

:nuke:

Edited for puncuation - and to add the bomb.

11. Democratic Lawmaker Asks Bush to Seek OPEC Oil Price Cut
http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=politicsNews&storyID=7813771

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. lawmaker on Friday asked the White House to explain why the Energy Department had not pushed OPEC to help lower crude oil and gasoline prices when the cartel meets later this month.

U.S. Energy Secretary Sam Bodman said at a Senate committee hearing on Thursday that the Bush administration had "limited" influence in getting OPEC to boost production and lower prices.

When Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon asked Bodman why he had not telephoned OPEC ministers to lobby them to lower energy prices, the secretary responded: "I have a lot on my plate."

Wyden did not like that answer and took his dissatisfaction with Bodman's job performance in dealing with OPEC to the secretary's boss -- President Bush.

more

I would like to see CNN do a poll. Do you want Boosh running all across the country trying to ruin Social Security, or would you prefer that he spend his time securing lower gas prices?

12. In another thread,
somewhere, sometime, someone pointed out that *, in the '00 election campaign, said he knew oil and would therefore be able to persuade OPEC to comply. I want that to be brought out for all to remember, too.
