Democratic National Committee Chairman Governor Dean Statement on African American Unemployment
Washington, D.C. – The Federal Government released unemployment numbers for February today. African American unemployment continued at record levels, climbing to 10.9%.

Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Governor Howard Dean issued the following statement:

"In a speech today, President Bush said he doesn't ignore problems. Then why has he ignored the growing African American unemployment rate? The African American unemployment rate is double the national average and up almost a full percentage point from a year ago. Since he took office, African American unemployment has increased by 31%. Democrats are offering solutions to help end the economic disparities while Washington Republicans continue to push for tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans."

1. I'm so pleased that Dean is addressing this issue
I heard someone say that African Americans admire Colin Powell very much but that they had been loyal to the Dem party because they did so much better economically under Bill Clinton than under Repubs.

8. Unemployment
Why, B* did address the problem of unemployment, and for rural white unemployed as well as city African-Americans. He started a war for them, didn't he? Jobs for everyone!

9. Good for Dean and it's ABOUT TIME
I am not surprised that madfloridian didn't know this figure - the Dems have have been ignoring the near third-world conditions in minority communities for far too long. How many know about the disparity in life-expectancy for African Americans? The appalling and frightening rates of HIV/AIDS among African American and Latino communities? The child mortality rates in some of our inner cities? The near 25% poverty rates? The huge #s incarcerated?

The Dems as well as the Repbulicans have been for the most part silent while especially the inner cities have turned into third-world war zones complete with child soldiers while they joined their Repbulican counterparts in calls to fight the insane "War on Drugs" and tougher sentencing - more arrests! more police! more prisons! But no jobs or health care or schools with books and paper or an adequate safety net.

And then wonder why this community doesn't turn out to vote in the #s that would win them elections?

I was never a Dean fan but I have been increasingly impressed by him lately. Keep it up, Dr. Dean.

12. Repubs will respond that Dean hired no blacks in his administration.
(Remember that sucker punch by Sharpton in the debates, the one that was set up by a little research and "advice" from no less than GOP operative Roger Stone?)

As always, the Repubs will attack the man, because they cannot defend themselves against the truth of his message.
