UN Asked To Investigate US Shooting of Italian Journalist
UN asked to investigate US shooting of Italian journalist and military intelligence officer

Reporters Without Borders today called for a UN investigation to shed light on the circumstances in which the US military fired on a vehicle carrying the newly freed Italian journalist Giuliana Sgrena yesterday in Baghdad, injuring Sgrena and killing an Italian military officer accompanying her.

"A thorough investigation must be quickly carried out by the United Nations into this blunder with tragic consequences," Reporters Without Borders secretary-general Robert Ménard said.

"It is clear that his enquiry cannot be conducted just by the US army which in the past, especially in the case of the Palestine Hotel shooting that killed two journalists, produced reports aimed solely at exonerating the military," Ménard said, adding, "we demand to know the full truth about this distressing affair."

1. can't argue with that...
it looks like a targeted assasination attempt to me as I am sure it does to Ms. Sgrena.

2. after reading these last few posts
i`ll agree the italians must have found out something that they knew they`d be killed for and that is why they didn`t stop. i think people in italy are wondering the same thing-what were they afraid of that they wouldn`t stop?

7. They are wondering
Robert Calderoli, Italian minister of reform, suspects a conspiracy behind the killing. The left-wing part of the parliament are refusing to vote to renew funding of the Italian mission in Iraq. The secretary of the Democratic Left Party, Piero Fassino, says the death is "absurd". Italians are certainly wondering...

10. Read more newspaper articles.
According to the Italians it wasn't that they didn't stop at a checkpoint. They were shot at by a patrol, not soldiers at a checkpoint.

We ask of the men who have taken hostage our colleague, Giuliana Sgrena, that they release her, not just as an act of generosity and of mercy, but because Giuliana has always been a journalist who has struggled for peace, and an ally of the Iraqi people. Her articles for “Il Manifesto” have always expressed her opposition to the war and to the occupation of Iraq by the Americans and by the international coalition supporting them. Keeping her prisoner or harming her would further damage the cause of Iraq and of the Iraqis in the eyes of the world, fuelling the arguments of those who want to impose “democracy” or “freedom” on the Arab-Moslem world through war and violence.

“Il Manifesto” does not believe this and has never believed it. It is an independent newspaper, peace-loving by tradition, and it has always opposed the “preventive wars” of George Bush. Through Giuliana’s eyes our readers have seen the suffering that is daily inflicted on the Iraqi people by the occupation, especially on the women and children, suffering that she was determined to give voice to

3. CBS news just called the incident "friendly fire"
then they aired a film clip of Sgrena being helped off of a plane in Italy. She didn't look like she was doing very well. Last night, BBC Radio referrred to "coalition" forces instead of US forces.

4. Funny on first reading, i saw "SS" instead of "US"...
and it read just the same, as if it happened 52 years ago. Seems our
SS is out of control.

8. And while they are at it, why not investigate ALL of the murdered
journalists in Iraq that were deliberately fired upon?

9.  Methinks the Bush administration is getting a little desperate...
I've read on another news group that within a short period of time, the US's real intentions will be laid bare. They will be forced to admit that it's about controlling the world's largest oil reserves.

Unfortunately for Washington, it's been dealt some stunning blows, just in the last 2 weeks.
