Pakistan gang-rape victim sees threat to her life
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/ISL275525.htm

ISLAMABAD, March 5 (Reuters) - A Pakistani victim of gang-rape said on Saturday that her life was in danger after the acquittal of five of the six men that she accused.

In a surprise decision on Thursday, a high court in the central city of Multan struck down a lower court decision which found the men guilty of raping Mukhtaran Mai, 30, on the orders of a village council in July 2002.

The High Court commuted the death sentence of a sixth man to life in prison in an appeal hearing in which the men pleaded not guilty.

Thå High Court acquitted the men on lack of evidence.

1. I applauded their original conviction
It gave me hope for women. This is too horrible to conceive...

3. My understanding was that the evidence was not lacking...
I could be wrong but I have gotten the impression that the lack of evidence has more to do with the weight that is given to a woman's "word" (and the evidence that may be uncovered by her "word") vs. that of a male.

I could be wrong; I have followed this case and feel a strong emotional kinship with the victim.

4. The men were pondscum who should have gotten jail terms
The men who levied the sentence should never breathe free again.

The men who didn't participate need to be taught a lesson that revenge taken against an innocent person whose only crime is to be a relative of someone who committed an infraction is a guarantee of hell.

The Muslim hell isn't any nicer than the Christian one.
