Topeka protesters show up in Cleveland "Thank God for 9-11"

By Jerry Gunn

CLEVELAND - A Topeka, Kansas anti-gay and lesbian group picketed near Truett-McConnell College Saturday in Cleveland, protesting against the Gay-Straight Alliance Club.

Eight demonstrators from Westboro Baptist Church, six adults and two children, held up protest signs on the roadside near the college entrance as a heavy escort of Cleveland Police and State Troopers looked on.

...

Shirley Phelps-Roper held a bright neon painted sign that read "Thank God for 9-11" and claimed it was her duty to come to Cleveland.

"You've got a bunch of lying false prophets that are running these churches being paid to tell people that God loves them," Roper said.

The eight member group scheduled demonstrations through the weekend at different locations around Cleveland and early Monday at White County High School.

214. "Hammerheads"
Our time has come age of the hammerhead
This is our mission to be the darlings of god
Too late for silence too late for anything
It's all too much for me it's roots go down to deep for me
Our punishing fire an animal frenzy
These hammerhead people, you know what danger is for
You let them in and now there everywhere
If it's mineral or vegtable it's back a little up a little

Shout push hammerheads bold and resolute
Marching balancing in too far to go back
Yes yes hammerheads swimming kissing
We are big and clever and we don't know anything

Purification by emersion in our filthy demon seed
We know the only things you like are paranoid sex and childish greed
*Our own worst enemies they hold us to our word
Look at the beast inside us gonna get us this time but good*
Whether we pull it out or push it in it all ends up the same
You know a hammerhead is a hammerhead by any other name

Onwards hammerhead bright and dangerous
Jumping running in the field and factory
God save hammerheads keeping going
We are sleek and special and we're sure of something

Blessed are the airmen
Blessed are the shit kickers
Blessed are the jackhammers
Blessed is the big damage
Blessed are the faith healers
Blessed are the moon wlakers
Blessed are the snake people
Blessed are the heat seakers

157. He says, "I AM" ... still laughing about the Republican thing.
Dogs and cats are both good for different reasons, that's why he made both of them.

Depends on His mood about the chocolate or vanilla thing. Eternity is such a long, long time to commit fully to one flavor or another, so many more important things to deal with and he just prefers variety.

Doesn't do much TV, He already knows who is going to win, so what fun is there for Him really? And can you imagine the flak He'd get if He was watching TV and something major happened? He says it isn't worth it.

God loves the whole world and blesses those who ask for it. American's just had the guts to ask and ask and ask.... you know that parable about the woman and the judge?

18. Don't try to understand them.
I'm convinced that if I really could understand even for a fraction of a second how these people think, I would start screaming, and screaming, and start clawing at my flesh and my hair would turn white, and the closest I would ever again come to communicating with other humans would be a wild-eyed stare, accompanied by cackling and drooling.

These people are not normal. They have something wrong with them, and the only way they are able to express themselves is through hate filled screeches that make no sense. Stay confused, Goldeneye, it's better that way.

They're signing on to the Neo-Con movement in the same way the Free-Soil Kansans took up the abolitionist movement before the civil war. Except they have it exactly backwards. They have what they feel is a divine mission but they're supporting the people who couldn't care less about their welfare.
Read Thomas Franks' "What's the matter with Kansas" and be enlightened.

You will find that we just shot them down in their bid to overturn the protection that the city council gave to the GLBT citizens in Topeka. You will find that the Grandaughter of Phelps just came in 4th out of 4 in her race for the city council. You will see that Fred himself has run for governor several times and has failed. You will see that a good many of his children have run for office and failed. You will see that we had the son of a bitch disbarred. You will see counter protesters out across from these sick creeps. So, are we still hateful, simple-minded, deranged, far-right, fundamentalist fuckwads? Hmmmmm? Come on down sweetie, you might just learn something. It is always a good thing to know what you are talking about when you set out to call an entire group of people names like that. You almost sound like the people you seem to dislike so.

99. Calm down. You missed my point.
Of course, any sane individual from anywhere won't shoot to Topeka and march about with signs deriding Kansans as deranged..etc. I offer that only as contrast to what went on in Ohio. I have not set out to label an entire group as Phelps supporters.
I'm concerned with what exactly motivates these people to travel to Ohio to rail against an issue there that's none of their business. It seems they do this because they feel they've some sort of divine mission to cleanse or whatever. Liberals, homosexuals, eastern elitist intellectuals, all united against a god-fearing America. Activist judges overturning the will of the people through the courts. All this shite is standard right-wing boilerplate.
If you haven't read "What's the Matter with Kansas?", please do. It's an excellent thesis on how the right wing has managed to pull off their assault on our country. Thomas Frank grew up in Johnson County, Kansas. He's not some "eastern elite" pontificating to The Heartland. The wingnut pundits like to say that the title, and of course the content of the book, denigrates Kansans. That's crap. The book does nothing of the sort.
And excellent job in keeping the nut cases out of office. No offense, but maybe you could see to it that Brownback, Tiahrt etal. are out looking for real jobs as well.

100. OK.
I am sorry to react so, I am not normally so reactive (except about this) but we hear this so much here. We happen to house those creeps but we are painted so often nationally as agreeing with them. We have been held hostage by them for so long that when people come here and see that we walk past without batting an eye they assume we agree. There is nothing we can do. Also I was a large part of that battle and it was a battle for every single No vote that we got. The lies of the other side were the very lies that the RW aways use and since the only side who got any press here at all was the other side I think we did well to win it. My guess is the closeness of the vote was because we were not able to reach everyone.

No offense taken about Brownback etc. They are very hard to beat and I have not figured out why yet. Mostly I think it is because the state has not fallen apart yet and people are lazy about educating themselves about the candidates.

Thomas Frank is great, no problem with his book.

This is the way Fred operates. In his early years he was tossed out of Utah for setting up tents and preaching against Mormons. He feels it is his duty to bring his word to all. I think he just thrives on attention and his sick mind really does believe that God is talking to him.

To add. I get a feeling, just a small one but it is there none the less, that things are beginning to turn here in Kansas. Just my NE part of the state, I do not know about the rest. There is a vague unease about the way the government is working.(about damn time) More questions are being asked and we Democrats have been working very hard. I think there may be a small but growing tide here that may change the redness of this state very quickly as this government continues on its assault on the common man. It probably will not happen quickly, it all depends on what the Republicans really do. Just a guess but something was mentioned in the paper today speaking of this as well. It has also helped to have so many visits by the big name Democrats in the last year. If that continues we may actually have a chance.

198. In earlier years, as a Dem,
he was a vocal advocate for civil rights. Back then, it was because he thought segregation and denying civil rights to African Americans was evil, against God's law. Now he feels his divine mission is to stomp gays and lesbians (and any who might support their fight for equal rights).

The problem is that he really does think he has God's ear and that God has his, and he really does think he cantell what is evil and deserves puinishment and what doesn't. He happened to be right on civil rights. But he mistakes his own prejudice agains gays as God's law.

What is worse is that his idea about how they should be treated is not just what some call "hate the sin, love the sinner." He and his group (most of them are actually his relatives) cheer such things as the beating death of Matthew Shephard. Phelps' son actually put up a website gleefully marking the number of days Matthew had been "burning in hell" since his murder.

He isn't just psycho. He has trained all of his kids to be equally vicious and irrational. And when he was disbarred, he raised them all up to be lawyers.

There is real sickness there. Can you imagine how twisted his mind must be?

It didn't start out that way but it turned out that way. I've mentioned this before but folks on all sides of the GLBT issue joined together to stand against these sick people. He did more good here than he could have known, and I'm sure it wasn't the result he was expecting. He has a tendency to unify the public at large against him wherever he goes.

My late aunt lived in Topeka for many, many years, and I used to go visit her there now and again. Nice town, nice people. I like the murals in your capitol building, especially the ones with John Brown. Awhile back, Phelps' groupies were picketing in our state capital, outside our Supreme Court building. I walked around observing and stopping other onlookers to tell them that as a fundamentalist Christian, I apologized for the picketers and their ugly, ugly signs. Shame on all of them! And congrats to Kansans for the way you're taking them on!

I would be more than happy to do a LARGE picket of his church but I don't think it would bother them at all, they would love it. We do have counter picketers out all the time but you never hear or see them in the news. It is just too good for the nation to see all the hate in one small city that they can vilify. 47. OMG! These people have diseased minds, and aren't they security threats?
after all, they apparently view the 9/11 attacks as a just act of God to punish the sinful. No doubt they believe they are uniquely fitted to judge whom God thinks is sinful and are eager to help Him do His job. I can sure see them bombing houses of people the suspect of being gay or of people they see as not hating gays enough or of churches...

Horrible, just horrible. And their violent insanity is dangerous.

69. My question exactly-->"aren't they security threats?"
All I've heard via radio and other media for four years is: 'Liberals hate america. We were attacked on 9/11 and have to retaliate. "We" should be more supportive and compassionate towards the 1000s who died on 9/11'

The response from our side (by moderate views) is that we DO LOVE AMERICA but we don't love George the Vulgar and his imperialistic enterprises/agenda. We want our country back.

Geez, they hate us for hating the Iraq invasion/occupation calling us unpatriotic for not realizing we were ATTACKED,ATTACKED,ATTACKED. Now it's okay for asshats like in the article to go out and PRAISE THAT ATTACK. Why aren't they being jacked up for "unpatriotic" hate speech?

Indeed, why do THEY HATE AMERICA???

I'm sorry, the more I see of freaks like this, the angrier I get. If I had been anywhere near that sign (going to jail here lol), I would have crammed it up her ass!! :grr:

115. And if that weren't enough, I do believe the administration LIHOP on 9/11
LIHOP = Let It Happen On Purpose
It may even be MIHOP = Made It Happen On Purpose
The conspiracy to allow the 9/11 attacks to happen for political gain and then cover it up continues to be the scandal that would finally bring down the Cartel if exposed. These insane protesters in their gratitude for the attack were just mirroring the blivet** and his neocon pals -- "Hey! I hit the Trifecta!"

because somewhere in his past he no doubt has said SOMETHING that wasn't virulently anti-gay. These people are against everybody, even Falwell. Truly unbelievable. I've long since given up trying to make any sense of them. Did they also have the sign that said something like "Fag US Troops"? When they demonstrated in Wichita in protest of Falwell (yeah, you read that right), we counter-protested, and when one of our group stood next to them with a rainbow flag, they got nervous and left--didn't want to stand next to a gay symbol. Now we know how to run our counter-protests.

Have a listen to some of the propaganda on his site.

He calls the US Armed Forces "Rumsfeld's Rump Rangers", and calls Bush a "fag enabler" for employing gays in the White House. I hate this guy too but it's a little rich to try to associate him with Bush.

243. No, Phelps hates Bush
Calls him a Fag President. Even though Bush has done more to revoke the civil rights of the gay community than any other president in history, Phelps calls him a fag.

As homophobic as Bush publicly is, it's hard to imagine that, but since the Guckert shit came out I'm starting to wonder if, for once, maybe Fred is onto something.

Hmm...thinking about it, maybe Fred really IS onto something. Bush loves the stratified America--the have-nots, have-lesses, haves and have-mores. If Bush was gay, the have-not and have-less gays (you know, the ones who aren't card-carrying RNC members) get shit on, while the have and have-more gays get to carry on their antics in peace and without fear of prosecution or retribution.

Then, when I saw the SHE, it made me wonder if perhaps she wasn't protesting too much. Another self-loather, perhaps? They're worse than ex-smokers!!!!!

He told me that Leviticus was written to be the law of Isreal when the nation was founded, and we keep it as a historical account, not as a commandment.

Of course, they love quoting it but miss the passages about allowing slavery, not eating shellfish, killing people who handle pigskins, etc.

105. There's more
It's not that they advocate killing people who touch the skin of a dead pig; it only makes one 'unclean'. However, there are a few other gems that are equally damning (pun intended!), such as the ones about women being forbidden from the temple during the period after giving birth (33 days of uncleanliness for a male child, I believe, and 66 days for a female child, IIRC), men being forbidden to be in the presence of their wives during their period of monthly uncleanliness, and so on.

Leviticus deals an awful lot with being and remaining 'clean'. It also gives instructions on how to cleanse, as well as information on proper sacrifices and such. But, there are some prohibitions in it which do make some sense, given the context of society at the time:

-Shellfish in a warm climate. That's kind of a no-brainer; that stuff spoils very fast without proper refigeration, which wasn't exactly available at the time.

-Dead pig flesh. Can't that carry worms and parasites if the pig is infected with them? I somehow doubt they would have had methods to get rid of those things at the time.

So, Leviticus had rules that made sense at the time. It's amazing to me, though, that people somehow still believe Leviticus has any sort of relevance to society today. Many of the things that Leviticus might prohibit for health reasons are nonissues today due to refrigeration and medical advances to which the society at the time simply had no possible access.

are embarrassed at not only the ugly Phelps clan but the other people in Topeka that voted along with the 'Fred Phelps' mentality. That Topeka vote was too close for comfort. Kansas seems to think they now have to pass laws supporting anything Bush says. Like the gov. of Kansas tried to make meds cheaper for Kansans and suddenly the old Bush-speak was alive in Topeka on the house floor trying to ban this (like Big PHARMA, the FDA, and the WH aren't in bed together)--too unsafe. Then in April, the whole state will vote on the gay marriage issue.

Personally I think at the national level, people need to keep putting pressure on Kansans, I don't think most Kansans like to be put on the same level as Mr. Snake Phelps---let them be answer why they side with him, embarrass the hell out of 'em. There are A LOT of blues in Kansas that wouldn't mind a bit. Just keep pushing at Phelps and he will make an a$$ out of himself willingly.

I made note of them because they were one of the groups cited on the website, and thought it was an interesting dichotomy..

I personally don't equate the two, since I find the foundation and development of NOI fascinating and largely justifiable.

But many do interpret some aspects of the current ideology as being racist, particularly Farrakhan's persistent description of Jews as 'blood-sucking leeches'.

248. Very interesting link, thank you.
As I said, I don't seriously regard NOI as a "hate group"; I just found it interesting that those two diametrically opposed groups in particular were represented in my town. I disagree with some of the more radical ideas they've espoused, especially regarding segregation and interracial unions, but overall I'm glad of their existence and their contributions to American society.

I would certainly not ban Rev. Farrakhan from expressing himself as Great Britain has for the past twenty years. Not only he and other leaders, but even the worst of humankind, like the Westboro Baptist Church, should at least be allowed to present themselves for public appraisal. In the case of some clever people in Ann Arbor, it proved to be a great fundraising tool. http://www.tolerance.org/news/article_tol.jsp?id=130

104. Swift boat vets' Regnery, Bush, and the Nazis

http://www.splcenter.org/intel/intelreport/article.jsp?aid=479

"Promoting white nationalism is nothing new for Regnery — or his family. His grandfather, William I, signed incorporation papers for the America First Committee, an organization that opposed fighting Nazi Germany in World War II. His father, Henry, created Regnery Publishing, one of the major purveyors of books by right-wing attack dogs like Anne Coulter and G. Gordon Liddy."

And Bush's grandfather made money off the Nazis.

This is sick and twisted. I wonder if they would have the guts to stand before a group of people who lost loved ones on that day. I bet they would; compassion and empathy don't seem like anything they have in store.

THIS IS NOT anything to do with the teachings of Christ. These are the very people he preached about - and why it was so necessary not to be like this.

I'm sure they'd be preaching hate against Christ himself were they to meet him in person and not know it was him...

news about his kids breaking away came out. I also remember 15 years ago, I was in Topeka with my then small sons. And Phelps and Co. were picketing wrestling (gay scandal in wrestling at that time) and I lied to my kids when they asked what those people were doing and what the signs said. Thank goodness, they were too young to read. Phelps has being doing this evil for too, too long.

One would think he would have died of skin cancer from all that pink skin being exposed outside too long picketing innocent people.

my son's best friend has same sex parents who adopted him and his bro from foster care; the man/woman marriage parents of these boys is a disgusting story. These boys are some of the most compassionate, old soul, head on straight boys (16 and 17) that I have seen. They have love, attention, and get to be normal teens with these women. I think God, their 'moms' found them.

BTW, Phelps doesn't realize his tactics backfire when parents like us will go further out of our way to teach that hate like this is wrong. ;)

Hypocrisy? Of course! But you can't alienate the base. It was by appealing to the evangelicals that loads of Republicans got elected, and it will be by keeping their mouths shut that they keep that support.

http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/news/nation/11053849.htm

And they only let him out if he PROMISED NOT TO PREACH!!!! (Clever doctors!): LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Rev. Jerry Falwell left a Lynchburg hospital Friday morning after a stay of almost two weeks while he battled pneumonia.

"I'm a little hoarse, but I'm alive and well and glad to hear from you," Falwell said from his Lynchburg home, where his family gathered Friday.

The 71-year-old pastor and chancellor of Liberty University entered the hospital Feb. 20 with what was initially thought to be congestion due to a viral infection. Doctors later diagnosed him with pneumonia.

Falwell, who praised the staff at Lynchburg General Hospital, said he struck a deal with the doctors. They allowed him to go home Friday as long as he agreed not to preach for several weeks.

52. Now here is a great idea
http://www.autbar.com/fred_phelps_press_release.htm

ANN ARBOR, MI - When the Reverend Fred Phelps came to town, the gay community here decided not to get mad.  They decided to get rich.

Among the Ann Arbor locales the Kansas-based Phelps and his band elected to picket was the /aut/ BAR, a gay-owned restaurant, bar and community gathering place.  When co-owner Keith Orr heard that his establishment was being targeted, he wanted to respond constructively.  He and his partner, Martin Contreras, did not want to promote a counter-demonstration, feeling that Phelps gains the most attention – and hence is most effective – when he provokes anger and outrage from his opponents.  Rather, Orr decided to use his Phelps visit to the community’s advantage.

Phelps’s plans to picket the bar came to light only two days prior to his scheduled February 17, 2001 demonstration.  With little time, Orr used the Internet to organize a unique fundraising scheme.  In an email message to customers, supporters, and friends, he proposed that people pledge money to the Washtenaw Rainbow Action Project (WRAP), a local gay advocacy group and community center, for every minute that Phelps picketed the bar.  In this way, Orr explained, the longer Phelps stayed to spew hate, the more money he would raise for WRAP.  He and Contreras kicked off the drive by pledging $1 per minute.

Contreras explained why he felt it was important to organize a response to Phelps.  “When I was first coming out fifteen years ago people told me, ‘You’ve got to watch out for this so-called reverend from Kansas named Phelps.  He’s out to wage war against the gay community.’  He had been showing up at funerals of people who had died of AIDS with signs claiming that gay people would burn in hell.  At the time he was just a blip on the radar screen.  But when he protested at Matthew Shepherd’s funeral he became a national menace.”

At the same time, Orr continued, “I didn’t want to give Phelps what he wanted,” meaning a counter-demonstration. “But just ignoring him seemed wrong.”

Only two minutes after Orr sent out his email message pledges began to pour in, not only from Ann Arbor, but from as far away as New Hampshire, Texas and California.  The pledge drive gained such momentum that by the day of Phelps’s demonstration – only 48 hours after Orr and Contreras kicked off the drive – friends and supporters of Ann Arbor’s gay community had promised to contribute a total of $107 for every minute Phelps picketed the /aut/ BAR.

“When I began the pledge drive I wasn’t necessarily expecting anything big,” Orr said.  “I just wanted to give people an opportunity to turn Phelps’s message of hate into something positive for our community.”  Even so, the size and speed of the response surprised him.  “Normally a fundraising event of this magnitude takes months of planning and a lot of up-front costs.  In 48 hours we raised over $6000 without spending a dime.  I was astonished.”

Pledges arrived in diverse amounts and from a wide range of sources.  They varied in amount from as little as 10 cents per minute to as much as 5 dollars per minute.  “The great thing about this kind of fundraiser is that no one is excluded.  People can participate at any economic level,” said Orr.  The range of contributors included neighboring business owners, a high school Gay/Straight Alliance and individual members of the Ann Arbor police force.

On February 17, the day of the protest, Phelps’s band numbered only four adults and two small children.  Instead of confronting the hate-mongerers and giving them the attention they craved, over one hundred community members and supporters gathered in the bar on a Saturday afternoon, celebrating while they counted the minutes that Phelps’s cronies stood outside raising money for Ann Arbor’s gay community.

That afternoon WRAP Board member Linda Lombardini received one notable pledge. “A father and his young son were driving past the bar and saw the protestors out front,” she explained.  “The son asked his father who they were and what they were doing there.  The father stopped the car and brought his son into the restaurant to demonstrate to him that gay people are no different from anyone else.  When he realized that we were holding a fundraiser he handed his son a ten-dollar bill to give to me.”

“We view this as a form of economic containment,” Orr said.  “Phelps is free to spread his message, however perverse we find it, wherever he wants.  The First Amendment protects his right to do that.  But we turned what could have been a negative into a positive.  This has been an incredible community-building experience for us.

“We hope that cities and towns across the country will do this everywhere he goes.  I get a charge thinking that every time he hits the road he will help us build our communities and fund our organizations.”

that picketed Matthew Shepherd's funeral with those hateful signs saying things I won't even repeat, but they were similar disgusting slogans. If they are so Christian, their message should make people want to be good and do good. All they make me want to do is :puke:. I can't stand living in a world with people like them in it. It's disgusting. And I can't stand the thought of spending eternity with people like them either.

BTW, has anyone ever noticed that when right wingers disagree with someone or something, they bomb the hell out of them, but when liberals and moderates disagree, we just discuss it like civilized people. I wouldn't put anything past the Phelps bunch. I'm sure they have their hands in some bombing or anthraxing plot as we speak.

Edited on Sun Mar-06-05 04:27 AM by TheWatcher
Gee, George, when you said "There ought to be limits to freedom", these people I must admit make it almost difficult to disagree.

They are truly the most vile creatures I have ever seen, and yes, I have encountered them up close. Simply the scariest people you would ever want to come across. They are blinded by hate that I cannot even comprehend or understand. They HAVE no ability to reason. Their eyes are DEAD. I swear some of them function by hate alone. They would cease to function if they did not have it.

When I encountered them at Pride a couple of years ago, it took everything I had not to get into it with them.

Anyway, let them wallow in their hate. Let them carry their stupid signs and make asses out of themselves.

But I still maintain my personal promise to them this day. Make a harmful move towards me, and attempt to manifest their hate in a physical manner, and it is guranteed that no matter what God they believe in, he WILL NOT save them from the consequences of such an action.

I know this reaction will draw fire, but this is beginning to get out of hand.

I would never question the right of another human being to exist, but it is getting harder and harder to deny the strong argument these people seem to make against such discrimination.

How do you solve a problem like these people.

They do not understand reason, and they have no wish to.

They remind me of the Aliens in Independence Day, and as stupid and horribly foolish as that film was, that one scene carries vast relevence with me sometimes.

"What do you want us to do?"

"DIE....."

Sorry, Phelps, you first.

87. These People Need to Read the Bible
"That was but a small sign of the doom of this nation," she said. "You can't live your life anyway you want to and expect to go to heaven."

This assertation of fundamentalists always gets me. The scandalous thing about Christianity is that this is absolutely not true. If you read the gospels and the writings of the Apostle Paul, you see there is only one requirement to get into heaven and have eternal life: belief that Jesus was the Son of God.

Now, mind you, that belief should be accompanied by a realization that your life should be spent being kind and loving to other people and serving and protecting the disenfranchised, the poor, the neglected, and the abused - again something else these people get wrong. But there is nothing in the Gospels about Jesus saying 'If you don't live your life the way these Jeebus freaks think, you're going to Hell.'

I really want to let Jim Willis spend some time with these people.

111. Just how do they determine...
...what disasters God has created and the reason behind them? I mean, not only do they claim to know that God caused the WTC's to be targeted, the Tsunami, and the shuttle to blow up, but they claim to know the REASON that God did these things.

It's funny and scary how these people can rationalize in their own minds that they must have some divine power that allows them to see the tragedies of the world and pick and choose which ones are god's messages and what he's trying to say. It must be wonderful to be so blessed as to get a glimpse of God's playbook.

I dunno...seems to me God would have better aim, don'tcha think? If God wanted to send a message about gays, would he really send a couple planes into a couple tall buildings and kill a bunch of non-gays in the process? Would he really need to send a wall of water thousands of miles wide to kill a hundred thousand people, just to warn us about a small minority of the population who are homosexuals? Seems to me if God really wanted to send us a message, he'd toss a big god sized boulder at a Gay nightclub or something.

Personally, I'd like to see God send a big boulder right at the Westboro Baptist Church and REALLY send a message to these hate mongers.

but if all these "good Christians" who think humans can manipulate God, would blow the dust off their Bibles and do some reading (assuming they know how to read) they might be surprised. I can't quote chapter and verse, but I do know that Jesus made a comment to the effect that "people who look for the coming of the Kingdom of God, may say, 'here it is', or 'there it is', but verily I say unto you, no one knows the time or the hour, no, not even the Son, but only the Father." So for any of you wingnut Fundamentalist lurkers out there, there you have it. Get a clue, get a life, and quit trying to bring on Armageddon. The life you save may be your own. OK, I'm off my soapbox now - I just had to get that off my chest.

What with her being high on God, J.C. and co. and all, I figure that she's probably home right now. Unless she disregards, "Remember the Sabbath, to keep it holy" along with "Love thy neighbor" Which wouldn't surprise me in the least. Perhaps we should voice our messages of support for her insanely zealous crusade.

I watched Meet the Press this morning and Our Minority Whip Mike Durbin was strong and he actually had reporters agreeing with him that privatization won't fix SS.

House Whip for the repubs was almost begging DEMS to come to the table, but Durbin said, "Not while privatization is on that table because it doesn't fix the problem and it costs money we don't have to implement it."

We could probably write in to local papers about this insanity and get some coverage if enough of us did it.

Key Points
* God does love the World. He said so, John 3:16
* 911 was a horrible loss of life and their protest disrespects all who tragically died that day.
* They don't represent most people in Kansas and should not pretend to do so.
* Most rational people will dismiss them as nut jobs anyway, but such a terrible display must be commented upon so as not to imply agreement.

are giving to the Phelps clan.

"That was but a small sign of the doom of this nation," she said. "You can't live your life anyway you want to and expect to go to heaven."

A Cleveland resident identifying herself only as Kim observed the group and their sign.

"I'm not completely sure about that but as far as the club in our high school, no...no."

The protesters came to Cleveland after a student group's effort to form a gay straight club at White County High School captured national headlines.

WHAT THE FUCK IS "I'm not copmletely sure about that but..." is suppose to mean?

Its ok to demonize the victims of 9-11 as long as you're hating on gays. Right freaking wonderful, god help this fuckin country.

Hey, does this mean, then, that Atta is the messiah?

And am I to understand that Phelps-Roper's church, then, is paid to tell people that God hates them?

... wait a sec... is she related to Fred "GHF" Phelps???

208. It's so disgusting it's funny.

http://www.godhatesfags.com/featured/sweden_royal_family.html

Get a load of this wording (which is rather naughty), these people are mentally perverted, thinking about the Dark Lord's private parts. Do they think God has one also?

"You jackass Swedes just don't get it. Once you have laws to chill Bible preaching, we don't give a rat's tutu whatever else you do or say. You are drippings from the Devil's own penis - a veritable sperm bank for Satan's queers."

Need proof? Look no further than that disgusting sign the chimp bitch is carrying. She and those like her are the deadliest species on this earth; They have no thoughts of their own, feed their young to the war machine and are highly ignorant.

Forgive them Father; They know not what they do!

Okay, I know there are religious wingnuts out there protesting a number of things, but "Thank God for 9/11?????????" I wish this lady had been working at the restaurant at the top of the WTC on 9/11. "Thank God for 9/11" is the most obscene thing I've ever observed on a protest sign.

187. I threw an entire 20 oz cup of beer right in the face of one of these fool
It was a few years ago, at Mardi Gras in New Orleans. You are allowed to drink in public there and everyone was having a GREAT time! We were walking up the street and there were these people with signs saying, "God Hates Fags." I was really amazed what I was seeing. As I walked pass own of them, I nailed him straight in the chest, neck and face with an entire full cup of cold sticky smelly beer! I was so pissed off that somebody was there to ruin the fun that we were having. I felt really good after that. It gave me a rush because of the confrontation, but I am fully glad that I wasted 4 bucks on soaking one of these pathetic morons! The guy was soaked from hair to toe!

Ha ha ha!

216. the problem is...
The problem is, when people on the right make these ridiculous statements, they are either dismissed as extremist cranks or are ignored, but when a left-leaning group makes controversial statements, there is a parade of propagandists like Hannity, O'Reilly, etc. who portray them as being representative of mainstream liberal thought.

The image of Phelps and his crew thanking God for 9-11 should be burned into the publics consciousness as an example of the true face of fundamentalism in the same way that PETA has been demonized for years.

we no longer live in a free society. Go along with the program, you're in like Flint. Show dissent, or even identify yourself as a Democrat, and you're a threat to these slime bags. They would like nothing better than a one party country - you know, you can still vote, but you only have a choice between Re puke candidates. Hmmm- similar to the old Soviet system that they were so afraid of.

240. What REALLY burns my ass about these in-bred morons.........
is their complete lack of disregard for the children they use as pawns to push their idiotic agenda. These are just children for crying out loud, and they're planting the seeds of hate and intolerance so deeply into their minds they don't stand a chance to become anything more than what their parents have become.

I'm not a christian, I don't believe in heaven or hell, but there has to be some force in the universe that evens out the balance sheet. Call it the Lords of Karma, whatever, but these beasts have some shitty vibes coming their way, and I'd love to be around to see it when it happens.

Using children as pawns just to increase their numbers at any of these "events", is beneath contempt. Something bad is eventually going to happen to these numb nuts, and I'll wager they use the children as shields when it does. That's how much they care about them.

241. Ugh...
The article even ends on a sad note. A local woman looks around at people holding signs that cheer on the terrorist murder of thousands of Americans...and the only thing on her mind is that she doesn't want a club to support gay students in her school. These people have blinders to their own viciousness.

247. Let me get this straight . . .
I'm a lying false prophet because I preach about God's love for people? And the truth is that I should be making other people miserable, especially by parading around in public with a sign that reads, "Thank God for 9-11?"

Damn. I never knew that; I'm so thankful this radical, patriotic woman of sincere faith opened my eyes.

Which Bible have I been reading all this time?

Maybe he is projecting hatred of himself for his own homosexual feelings.

searching Google News for "thank god for 9/11" yields the above link, which as you say is dead.

But there is a functioning story at that site on the protests, without references to that sign. Hmmmm....

Edited on Tue Mar-08-05 03:40 PM by pelagius

...of fewer than 30 members, all relatives of Phelps in some way. Their "church" buildings are a compound of houses in Topeka they share. They a fringe freaks who get far more media coverage than they deserve. Look at the DU reaction, for example, everytime these slime crawl out from under their rocks.

Please do not extrapolate any conclusions about Christianity from the behavior of these morons. It's like observing that most serial killers are white men and concluding that most white men are serial killers. The statisical sample is too small to draw any sort of conclusion.

By way of contrast, please check out the opposition to Bush's proposed budget by mainstream Christians:
