Rice Chooses Her 'Counselor'
by John F. McManus
March 5, 2005

Philip Zelikow, a former close associate of Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, has been reunited with her and will serve as her senior adviser at the State Department.
The two became close when they worked together during the administration of George H.W. Bush. In 1999, they collaborated as co-authors of the book, Germany Unified and Europe Transformed: A Study in Statecraft. Commenting on the selection of Zelikow, Rice stated: “Philip and I have worked together for years and I value his counsel and expertise.” For the past six years, Zelikow, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations since 1992, led the University of Virginia’s Center for Public Affairs as its executive director. During that period, he also served as the executive director of the 9/11 Commission.

In his new position, Zelikow will be referred to simply as “Counselor of the U.S. State Department.” His responsibilities will include advising the secretary on foreign policy issues and international negotiations. Wendy Sherman (CFR) served as counselor to Secretary of State Madeleine Albright (CFR) until 2001. The post had not been filled during the years Colin Powell was our nation’s secretary of state.

1. So now she needs someone else?
So now she needs someone to advise her on how to screw things up? I thought she did that pretty well on her own as NSA.

5. here's some background on him
http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Philip_Zelikow

Philip D. Zelikow is Executive Director of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, otherwise known as the 9-11 Commission.

There's a raft of evidence to suggest that Zelikow has personal, professional and political reasons not to see the commission hold Rice and other Bush officials accountable for pre-9/11 failings, and may be the de facto swing vote for Republicans on the panel.<1> (http://antiwar.com/sperry/?articleid=2209) Here are just a few of them:
.....
-After the 2000 election, Zelikow and Rice were reunited when George W. Bush named him to his transition team for the National Security Council. Rice reportedly asked Zelikow to help organize the NSC under the Scowcroft model, which was insular and steeped in Cold War worldview.
-Former White House terrorism czar Richard Clarke says he briefed not only Rice and Hadley, but also Zelikow about the growing al-Qaida threat during the transition period. Zelikow sat in on the briefings, he says.
.....
According to Melvin Goodman, Zelikow "headed a case study project at Harvard and took hundreds of thousands of dollars from the CIA. He used CIA documentation and produced case studies that exonerated the CIA from any charges of politicization of intelligence, particularly with regard to the Soviet Union." <6> (http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=04/04/29/1513213)

* That last link explains that Melvin Goodman is a "former CIA and State Department analyst. He is a senior fellow at the Center for International Policy and director of the Center's National Security Project. He is the author of the new book "Bush League Diplomacy: How the Neoconservatives Are Putting the World at Risk" (Prometheus)"

6. Ha! "Counselor." .....i.e. Rosebud..
subtle reference..

Aside from that...Condi needs alot of "hand holding." As the Chimp's paramour he always know she needs some "other protection." She's just too "clueless" to deal with current affairs. So Either "Unca Dickie or "Unca Jimmy (Baker) stepped in once again to keep the "chimp" from doo dooing his britches...and sent in Zelikow on a "white horse" to rescue little Condi. She would enjoy that "white horse, thingy."

11. I won't forget the coincidence of the word appearing two times within
two weeks and both in regard to 9-11.

Tell me...if you've read the Commission Report...was anything said about explosives in the Report? If I remember, Bush would only permit the investigation to be conducted if it were focused on why government agencies failed, nothing criminal, nothing evidential.

Coincidences can be very interesting.
