Health care disparities kill 80,000 blacks annually-US study
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N09296040.htm

WASHINGTON, March 9 (Reuters) - More than 80,000 black Americans die every year because of continuing disparities in health care, former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher said on Wednesday.

Although the government, public and insurance companies know blacks get shortchanged in health care, little has been done to improve the situation, Satcher and other health experts said.

Satcher examined U.S. mortality rates for blacks and whites between 1960 and 2000 and found that 40.5 percent more blacks died each year than would have been expected if they were white. That adds up to 83,570 deaths a year, he reported in a special issue of the journal Health Affairs.

Many studies have looked at the gap between blacks and whites in health care, and find a variety of factors contribute to the problem, including economic status, education, prejudice and access to doctors and clinics. Many U.S. blacks also say they mistrust doctors and hospitals.

1. If this were happening in Iran Bush would be calling it genocide
And at least 50% of the country would agree with him. Funny, ain't it?

Hi everyone. I'm Gary Null. I'd like to invite you to a special presentation: an in-depth investigation into the subject, "The Pathologizing of African Americans by Psychiatry." To prepare the information for this series required years of work on the part of dozens of individuals. This could not have been done without the Citizens Commission on Human Rights International and the Citizens Commission on Human Rights of Florida, and so many individuals spending thousands of hours doing scholarly research. I'm indebted to them for the information I'm about to present.

3. And judicial disparities have another million in prison.
1 in 10 blacks are in prison.

65% of prison population.

America is fucked up.

Interesting synopsis:

8. Not quite
Almost one in ten black men aged 26-29 are in prison, as far as I know - the incarceration rate is a good deal lower in other groups. Not that it's not very depressing that so many in just this group are in jail - these guys are often young fathers whose sons really need them - but let's not make up numbers, either.

4. I'm sure Bush will do "hard work" to increase that number
My GOP Fundie officemate was appalled by reality when I gave him a copy of the article 'Number 1' which gave our real-time ratings when compared to the rest of the world. He said, "And here I thought we were the best in everything. This is disgusting!"

Sometimes, the deluded just need information.

5. If they get sick and die it's their own fault
If they weren't so lazy, they'd work hard and get a decent job with insurance coverage. Plus they abuse their bodies with drugs and expose themselves to AIDs. They'll be treated as someone with worth when they show themselves as worthy.

Signed,
Freepers and other conservative extremists

12. They actually believe that until it happens to them.
My in-laws are the worst Freepers I know (don't do the site but sound like they do--so Republican they get the party catalog!), and they said all that crap until my MIL got breast cancer, FIL lost his job just after she finished her treatments, and then she developed a nasty auto-immune disease from the radiation treatments and is on COBRA, as no one will insure her anymore. That opened up their eyes, and they actually talk with my husband now about a national health care plan (was an off-limits topic before, but now they want one). :eyes:

7. knitter, this has to be frustrating
for your husband, as I imagine the fact that about 18,000 people a year die as a direct result of not having insurance must be also. I know he's one of the good ones, working hard to prevent things like this. I just wish there were a lot more like your husband in medicine!

11. Oh, just don't get him started!
He gets so very angry about all the patients he's desperately trying to help, only to run smack into walls at every turn. Part of it is the patient's issues (has the money for a new car but not for the testing and meds that could save his life, that kind of thing), part of it is the office where he works (they won't take Medicaid, and he's really ticked about that--even though he understands why they don't, as the reimbursements are so bad that it's basically free care), and part of it is just the sucky economy around here (which he blames * for and is really angry about).

We really, really, really need a national health care plan, and we need to get through to everyone that health care is a right! (Then, maybe my hubby will stop grumbling every night . . .)

9. Diet has more to do with it than health care does.
The type of food and the way it is prepared kills more.

13. All those chitlin's & fried chicken, you mean?
Why did the report focus on differences in health care?

14. Check the report: it probably took that into account.
The average American consumes the same amount of fat, salt, and empty calories, regardless of race or ethnic background. In my town, I see people of every color at Krispy Kreme.
