Cheney talks about `major educational effort' on Social Security
WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney on Thursday dismissed polls that suggest there's little public support for creating private investment accounts as part of Social Security.
...
Asked about polls indicating that private accounts are increasingly unpopular with voters, Cheney said he put no stock in the polls when Americans are still learning about the problems ahead for Social Security.

"The notion that you can lay out something this important, this complicated, that touches hundreds of millions of people and then go take a poll and say, `Oops! Sorry, we're going to stop' makes no sense at all," he said. "A poll's a snapshot in time. We're involved in a major educational effort here."
...
In the interview in his West Wing office, Cheney also suggested that the administration may soon take a more combative tone toward Democrats, who've said they'll never accept - or even negotiate about - private accounts as part of Social Security.

Edited on Fri Mar-11-05 07:45 AM by BiggJawn
Yeah, right, Limp-balls. "Just an entertainer"

Hang around anyplace where men in greasy tractor hats who get dirty or hold a steering wheel for a living gather and see how long it is before somebody says "Well, I wuz listening to Rush t'day, and HE said..."

When Scotty McClellan has a staff meeting, does Rush attend in person, or by teleconference?

3. One question... how will Privatization of Social Security solve the
problem of solvency? That's the ONLY question that needs to be asked.

When medicare is brought up, we need to restate that the discussion is about Social Security, not medicare.

18. Just like Hermann said....

""Why, of course, the people want retirement money," Cheney shrugged. "Why would some poor slob in a flat want to risk his lifesavings on a system when the best that he can get out of it is to have cat food 3 days a week?"

Naturally, the common people want retirement money; either in Russia or in England or in America, or for that matter in Murka.

That is understood.

But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship."

"There is one difference," I pointed out. "In a democracy the people have some say in the matter through their elected representatives, and in the United States only Congress can change Social Security."

"Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy.

All you have to do is tell them they are going broke and denounce the Democrats for lack of patriotism and exposing the people to future poverty.

It works the same way in any country."

Damn, I didn't have to change too many words in old fat Herman Goering's speech....

6. Cheney is as big a moron as his boss
if he thinks that this scheme will get ANY popular support.

"In the interview in his West Wing office, Cheney also suggested that the administration may soon take a more combative tone toward Democrats, who've said they'll never accept - or even negotiate about - private accounts as part of Social Security."

And he and his lackeys will get a nasty surprise--because this is a new party, one that won't just bend over and take it.

21. The Cheneys are SO dysfunctional
They loved Mary in 2000 for being Gay and used her to the 10th degree for her orientation. In 2004, they loved Mary for being gay as long as she kept her mouth shut and blamed the outing on Kerry. Mary in the meantime is in la-la land. She was a gay working for Peter Coors but he lost. Who knows what Mary is now, but she'll probably surface again. Maybe as a GOP bisexual salvaged by an Enron/Falwell religious coalition.

"The vice president's office offered the interview to The Charlotte Observer in what appears to be part of a strategy to avoid the national media and speak more directly to voters. On Tuesday, Cheney did a sit-down interview with The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. He'll talk to conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh on Friday and start his town hall meetings the week of March 21 in California."

36. I'm beginning to think they have the votes to do this
They plan to relentlessly "educate" us into going along with what I'm beginning to believe may be a done deal. Think about the Iraq war and how they sold that. The White House Iraq group was an inner circle of political operatives who knew how to work deals and manipulate ANYTHING to get to the desired end. They now have a similar group working on Social Security.

Karen Hughes is coming back from Texas. I guarantee that Mary Matalin and Rove are on it 24/7. Bush has completely given up any semblance of running the country at at time of war to do TWO MONTHS of dog and pony shows.

I will wager than in about a week we will start hearing polls that say public information is starting to turn on Social Security. First, people will start to believe there is a crisis. Then, they will start to say that Bush's "plan" is better than anything the Democrats have offered to save SS. (Never mind that there is no Bush "plan".)

Remember how insane the rush to war was? Remember how we couldn't believe that the rest of the American public couldn't see what we could? That there were no WMDs and it was all a pretense?

We still tend to think that Bushco plays by the rules when we've seen over and over that they don't. Remember how they made fun of the polls before the invasion of Iraq? Remember how they dismissed millions of protestors?

These people are evil and they NEVER stop trying to hurt us.

37. This is good for us......Grab on tight to that third rail, Dick
and burn baby burn.

Go ahead. Take a 'combative tone'. Those elederly people really appreciate their organization being called anti-american and gay loving. The elderly will also want to see the people who are defending their program being beaten up.

Keep going with your bullying ways, Dick. Just keep it up. Go ahead and force alot of the repubs to go along with you. Force them to drink the kool aid and grab on to the third rail.

Burn baby burn. Zap Zap.

You're just going to make everyone else realize what those of us on the DU are already know. That you're all f*cking insane.
