Poll: Bush Losing Backing Over Soc. Sec. (AP)
WASHINGTON - President Bush (news - web sites) loses backing from independents, women and older Americans when he changes the topic from terrorism and foreign policy to overhauling Social Security (news - web sites), an Associated Press poll found.

While a majority of Americans approve of Bush's handling of terrorism and foreign policy, just over a third, 37 percent, like his approach to Social Security.

The war on terrorism was the principal theme of Bush's re-election campaign, yet he has focused in the early days of his second term on Social Security. Some polls indicate he's been losing ground on that issue.

A majority of Americans, 56 percent, say they disapprove of Bush's handling of Social Security. A similar number in a recent AP poll opposed the creation of personal accounts.

1. He doesn't poll well on his wars any more, either
if memory serves. Maybe the War On Poor People will be the one that pulls him out of the crapper.

7. That would make a good
bumpersticker -- something with "Bush's War on Poor People"... there are still so many people who just don't see that's exactly what's happening.

4. "Losing backing"?? He never had it to begin with.
This is what kills me. He goes on a 2 month taxpayer paid expense dog-and-pony show. The media acts like he has something to say. This SS deal was DOA as soon as he mentioned what he planned to do. Instaed, we get an ad naseum speech fest on MSM. This is nothing more than a deflection away from the war.

11. these charts
are virtually ignored by the MSM. We are given the impression that America loves and approves of this idiot and the truth is that the majority emphatically does not! This needs to be discussed and reported publicly so that the sheeple can get real about this administration.

13. I hope the Dems give no ground on this issue
They've been doing a good job at not giving any so far, and I hope they will keep it up.

I'd love to see this be the issue that pushes Shrub towards early lame-duck status. He seems to have made it his "issue of the year"- his obnoxious tactic of picking one issue and talking it to death 'til it reaches "crisis" level and he is able to do what he wants regarding it because the general public decides there must be something to it since he won't shut up about it and the Dems become too weak to fight him anymore. But his tactic of using all his political clout on something would definitely backfire if he gets shut down. In fact, that could be the worst that could happen to Bush since he his tactic since he was Governor has been focusing on just a couple of issues and ramming them down everyone's throat and ignoring everything else. A loss on one of his major issues would hurt him more than it would hurt most Presidents, the way I see it.

17. 30% or so
Would praise his loving support for animal rights if he raped a goat live on TV. That right-wing base will support anything he does.

(I have to agree with you, though... it's still scary!)

The other 7% or so, I figure, are young people who think there's no way they can lose if privatization goes through; they think it's automatically more retirement money for them. That's one angle I think the Dems should play up more; the riskiness of privatization for young people. Most older Americans are currently on the side of the Dems because they fear Shrub's scheme will screw with their benefits; the Dems need to work more on showing young people some of the dangers of Shrub's "risky scheme" as they are the only age group that seems to be in favor of it, at least according to some of the polls I've seen.

20. Poll Bad News for Bush on Social Security (NYT)
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Published: March 11, 2005

Filed at 7:23 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- As President Bush campaigns to change Social Security, he needs to win over independents, married women and Southerners -- people who tend to support him on terrorism but have indicated doubts about his plans for the retirement program.

Just over a third of Americans, 37 percent, approve of Bush's handling of Social Security, an Associated Press poll found. When it comes to Bush's strong suit -- handling foreign policy and terrorism -- 52 percent approve of the president.

A majority of Americans, 56 percent, say they disapprove of Bush's handling of Social Security. A similar number in a recent AP poll opposed the creation of personal investment accounts, a proposal central to Bush's plans.

But if they do it now, they'll seal their electoral doom in '06.

23. The longer they drag this out, the better.
They've already lost this one.

It's about time the Democrats stood shoulder-to shoulder on something.

Bush is having his ass handed to him.

Sixty days, sixty appearances? How many left?

Any wagers he'll do all sixty? I got ten bucks (that's seven Euros) that sez he'll bail by the end of next week on this loser.

25. No wagers here
he's going to have a lot more "scheduling conflicts" in my opinion. I really hope he does do 60, because of the protests and negative publicity, but I just don't think it's gonna happen...

on "terrorism"..what the fuck do these people know? If you can believe the polls.

I don't want bush and conrice in charge keeping terrorists away..they let 9/11 happen on their watch, opened up a big can of terrorist whupass in the Middle East, and they aren't protecting our Nation..but some people in the US are too damn dense to know that.

The Remarkable Ringer
There was a remarkable exchange during President Bush’s meticulously choreographed townhall meeting in Alabama yesterday. One of the people selected to speak with Bush was a woman named Sarah Garrison Webster. It’s clear that she was chosen because she is a federal employee who is eligible for the federal Thrift Savings Plan, a program that gives federal employees the option of putting some of their retirement money into stocks. Ms. Webster was supposed to be Exhibit A on how much people love to invest their retirement money in stock funds. It didn’t go exactly according to plan:
