Church group holds anti-gay rally (Phelps outnumbered in Co. Springs)
Edited on Fri Mar-11-05 08:28 PM by intheflow
This happened at my boyfriend's son's high school. His son said there were 15 Phelps protesters and about 500 counter-protesters. The headline should be "Decent Community Takes No Shit From Phelps."

http://www.koaa.com/news/view.asp?ID=3318

Members of an anti-gay Baptist church protested at Palmer High School Friday morning because a student had attempted to form a school-sanctioned gay straight alliance.

About a dozen representatives from Fred Phelps' Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka carried signs that read "God hates fags" and "Fags are worthy of Death." Phelps is known for his strong anti-gay statements. He has previously demonstrated in Trinidad against sex change operations and at Focus on the Family, after Focus had hired former gays and lesbians.

Phelps' grandson led the 30 minute protest Friday. Several hundred people from the community held a counter demonstration nearby. Colorado Springs Police reported no major problems. No arrests were made and classes continued inside the school as usual.

20. The most intersting part of this story for me is that this is Co.Springs,
home to Focus on the Family. They were the ones originally up in arms over this HS club, but I notice they didn't want to support Phelps in his overt hate-mongering. (They prefer covert hate-mongering.) But the fact that 500 people came to counter-protest on a weekday in the Springs... well, that just seems like some kind of community progress to me.

4. If you substituted any other group name
in that statement --- there would be hell to pay.

School teachers are worthy of death!

I know we have freedom of speech, but aren't there some laws concerning hate speech? I mean, saying fags are worthy of death is calling for them to be killed, isn't it?

15. Roberston and Falwell hate Phelps
Not only is Phelps a very public embarassment for them, but he also pickets them more than he pickets actual gay events. That's what makes good ol Fred so hillarious. He spends the majority of his time picketing guys like Falwell and Graham and Focus on the Family and local evangelical churches.

6. Shouldn't there be a difference between a hate protest and a political
protest? I don't think promoting hate should be able to get a permit to protest. Protesting a certain groups born with attributes is just insane. I mean thats like saying all blond, blue eyed children are evil and should go to hell. It may even incite someone to cause physical harm to someone.

kudos to the town for standing up to this group. Wow, I almost said wacko group but that word is so overused by the pugs.

Ben Phelps said "God hates people" - not once, but twice.

That whole damn family needs to book time in a rubber room.

17. I simply cannot allow you to insult gay people that way.
Phelps is a genetic freak of nature. He was born, as Will Pitt would say, with bees in his brain.
