Rome - The Italian journalist and former hostage who was wounded by US gunfire in Baghdad underwent surgery on her shoulder on Monday, her second operation since the shooting, Italian news reports said.

The Italian news agency Apcom quoted Sgrena's companion, Pier Scolari, as saying the operation was successful. No further information on the surgery was immediately available.
Sgrena had undergone surgery in a US military hospital in Baghdad to remove shrapnel from her shoulder shortly after the shooting. The journalist, who works for communist daily Il Manifesto, had been kidnapped in the Iraqi capital on February 4 while doing interviews.
The shooting has outraged Italy and prompted officials to demand an explanation from Washington.
