Mussolini on hunger strike

THE granddaughter of Italian wartime dictator Benito Mussolini started a hunger strike today after being barred from next month's regional elections over signature forgeries.

Alessandra Mussolini, founder of the far-right Social Alternative movement, is appealing the ban in a Rome court.

More than 800 signatures on her petition to stand in the election for president of Lazio region have been declared false. The list allegedly includes names of the dead and others whose existence was dubious, such as people who gave their birth date as February 31.

Ms Mussolini abandoned the right-wing National Alliance party after its leader, and current foreign minister, Gianfranco Fini paid a visit to Israel and publicly condemned her grandfather. Fini's gesture symbolically cut the party's ties to fascism.

She SHOULD NOT be denied the right to vote. (From my understanding of an earlier story from this weekend, I believe.) No matter what her political leanings may be she deserves that right. Fake signatures? Well, that's just BS and she should not be allowed on the ballet for such nefarious activities.

I do not wish that she starves to death. I just wish that the powers that be in Italy would come to their senses and put an end to this madness. Haven't we enough of it with America's aims at global hegemony?

She is not allowed to be a candidate because more than 800 of the 3500 signatures on her petition to stand for president were fake. What's the problem with not allowing fake signatures?
