Mfume Announces Senate Bid
"It is with great pride and deep humility that I announce to you today my candidacy for the Senate of the United States," Mfume said in a three-page statement made available to reporters at a news conference in Baltimore.

Mfume, who was a five-term U.S. congressman before becoming president of the Baltimore-based National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, issued the statement after incumbent Paul Sarbanes announced Friday that he will not run for re-election.

Mfume is the first candidate to formally state he is running for the seat of retiring Senator Paul Sarbanes, who said Friday he would not seek a sixth term

4. Oh yeah, we got em.
That's what happens when you elect a republican governor.

We did manage to go for Kerry in the election though. I guess they couldn't fudge the numbers THAT badly.

6. Oh, Mfume isn't a done deal.
There's gonna be a ton of candidates in the Dem primary. They've been waiting years behind Sarbanes and Mikulski.

7. But do they have the instant (all time zones) name recognition?
Mfume will be able to raise a serious chunk-o-change!

He's already got my vote, and he doesn't even have to campaign in Baltimore. A few public appearances here, and he can concentrate on the freeper pockets around the state.

8. I think he has a really good shot.
But it will be interesting to see who's going to run for governor and who's going to run for the Senate.

15. Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley will run for governor.
That leaves the senate seat to Mfume.

We win all around.

Now, which candidate's campaign should I join?

Decisions. Decisions.

that "looks (kinda) like America."

I need to read up more on his record in Congress and in the NAACP, though.

10. I think the Dem. nominee will be either O'Malley or Duncan
or maybe Steny Hoyer, a powerful House Democrat.

18. O'Malley and Duncan are both running for guv - Hoyer has been silent.
I think Hoyer is laying low because he wants to stay in the House in case Dems recapture control in 06. If Hoyer wants to run for Senate, he had better announce soon. I don't know that he could beat Mfume and Mfume now has a head start on him.

23. I got an email from Duncan
saying that he's running for governor, not the Senate. I read that O'Malley has said the same thing.

The article says that Hoyer has expressed no interest yet. I have a friend who wants Hoyer to stay her rep. If Hoyer gives up his seat, it could very well fall into Republican hands.

19. I will vote for him in the general, but not in the primary.
Right now Im looking at Rep. Steny Hoyer, Rep. Ruppersberger, Rep. Ben Cardin, and Rep. Albert Wynn. If any of those guy's run they will get my support in the primary.

I think Mfume would be the weakest general election candidate of any of the possible Democratic candidates mentioned.

24. Former NAACP Leader to Run for Senate
Mar 14, 2:26 PM (ET)
By GRETCHEN PARKER

BALTIMORE (AP) - Former NAACP President Kweisi Mfume announced Monday that he will run for the U.S. Senate in 2006.

"It is with great pride and deep humility that I announce to you today my candidacy for the Senate of the United States," Mfume said at a news conference in Baltimore.

"I can't be bought. I won't be intimidated. I don't know how to quit," Mfume said as his supporters applauded.

Mfume, who was a five-term U.S. congressman before becoming president of the Baltimore-based National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, issued the statement after incumbent Paul Sarbanes announced Friday that he will not run for re-election.

26. Wynn Out, Then Who?
And they're off!

Al Wynn announced, according to the Sun, that he would <a href="http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/local/politics/bal-mfume0314,1,2565253.story?coll=bal-home-headlines">defer to Mfume</a> his ambitions for the senate.

Republicans whose names have been <a href="http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/local/politics/bal-md.sarbanes13mar13,1,4961458.story?coll=bal-mdpolitics-headlines">added to the mix</a> are former U.S. Rep. Connie Morella, governor's wife Kendel Ehrlich and conservative state Sen. Alex X. Mooney.
