Mine Kills U.S. Soldier, Wounds Four in Afghanistan
Wed Mar 16, 2005 1:49 AM ET

KABUL (Reuters) - One U.S. soldier was killed and four wounded by a land mine explosion in western Afghanistan, the U.S. military said on Wednesday.

The five soldiers were part of a military police contingent at Shindand, the site of the former Soviet air base close to the Iranian border in Herat province.

The land mine explosion happened on Tuesday. Two of the wounded were able to return to duty after treatment, while one was stable and the other suffered severe back injuries, the military's statement said.

The total force in western Afghanistan is 2,400-strong, with Afghan troops forming the lion's share.

4. That country has been chock full of land mines since 1978
It could be anything from enemy action to a mine from the Soviet invasion.

At least that soldier's family can say that he really died fighting for his country.*

*No, that does not mean I approve of the Bush Administration's handling of Afghanistan, only that that war had a foundation of justification, unlike Iraq.

Paul McCartney's Quest To Rid World of Landmines
"For years the McCartney’s have worked with the Adopt–A-Minefield® campaign to raise awareness. Paul says he’s met with world leaders like Vladimir Putin and U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell about the cause. 'A lot of progress is being made,' he says. 'The trouble is it's very difficult for world leaders to just say, 'Okay, we won't use landmines,' adds McCartney."

KABUL (Reuters) - Three Afghan civilians have been killed by a land mine explosion near the same spot where a U.S. soldier died and four others were wounded hours earlier in a similar blast.

The U.S. soldiers, part of military police contingent in western Afghanistan, were on patrol on a road near Shindand, site of a former Soviet air base close to the Iranian border, U.S. military spokesman Major Steve Wollman said on Wednesday.

Three hours later a vehicle hit a land mine on the same stretch of road, killing three and wounding four Afghan civilians on board, Mohammadullah Afzali, a spokesman for the governor of Herat province told Reuters.

"The authorities suspect the mines had been recently planted," Afzali said.
