Employees Bring Own Toilet Paper to Work
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=817&e=7&u=/ap/budget_dirty_bathrooms

BUFFALO, N.Y. - It was BYOTP time in Buffalo: Bring Your Own Toilet Paper.

A county budget crisis left the bathrooms in a municipal office building with empty soap dispensers, paperless paper towel holders and bare cardboard toilet paper rolls. Employees also complained the bathrooms weren't being cleaned.

"It's almost humorous, but it's disgusting," said Bob Fioretti, who has worked in Erie County's Rath Building for 21 years.

"When people got to bring their own toilet paper and soap to wash their hands, it's like working in another country, a bad country," he told WGRZ-TV. Fioretti said there was waste piling up in some of the toilets.

<snip>

"The Building and Grounds Department has been cut severely," Montgomery told The Associated Press on Thursday. Besides losing money, the department has had layoffs.

1. Why should we be different??
I spent time in a third-world nation and that's how it worked in the gov't buildings there.

8. Because this is artificial poverty
I say it's artificial because the wealth in this country has been concentrated into as few hands as possible. This is overall still a very rich nation. Until and unless we find the will to grab the wealth back from the few, the many will continue to suffer.

11. Exactly
The money keeps going from the bottom to the top. Roll back the tax cuts for the rich, get the hell out of Iraq, and spending billions on an immoral war, and put the money into social programs, and rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure.

Smirk and his band of criminals have done more damage to our country than I could have imagined, and I knew he would be a dreadful president. My big mistake was in thinking that after the SCOTUS handed him the victory after the election fraud in Fla, that our Democratic congresspeople would put up more resistance.

The same press who hounded Clinton, who handed us a budget surplus, and a good economy, could find no fault at all in what this miserable excuse for a leader does. I don't mind admitting I was wrong, I'm just sick about all the misery it's caused, and the further misery to come.

31. It is only a matter of time before we have cigarette and tissue sellers
...on every corner. Guys who hang about with a small table or a tray that hangs from their neck, where you can buy a single cigarette and a packet of kleenex for a small bit of coin. They're all over the underdeveloped countries, and no one in their right mind goes anywhere without one of those little kleenex packs in one's pocket or purse, because if you don't have one, it's time to deploy the water hose and the hand (if you are in a country with a bomb site toilet, that is!).

world apparently. I saw that on tv the other day, they did a study and they were talking about how it is better to scrunch your tp than fold it, less bacteria get through to your hands.

10. Erie/Buffalo was set to close all of its public libaries
late last year. There was a major "support our libraries" campaign that allowed them to remain open, but with cutbacks. It would appear that keeping the libraries was at the expense of public lavatory maintenance and sanitation. That part of the rust belt isn't recovering and having a whole series of unpaid mandates from Homeland Insecurity is savaging their budgets.

It's a sad sad world -- and there are many other metros on the brink of devolution into the 3rd world, too. They're just faking it better and still humming a bar or two.

19. What the good people of Brussels really think about Bush.
PISS OFF.
02/22/2005 8:40:00 AM
Brussels
WHEN JOHAN VANDE LANOTTE, Belgium's Vice Prime Minister, goes to the toilets today, he finds the urinals in the offices of his ministry decorated with stickers. They show an American flag and the head of George W. Bush. "Go ahead. Piss on me," the caption says. Vande Lanotte is one of Bush's hosts in Brussels. Is peeing on your guest's head appropriate? In Belgium it is. After all, Brussels' best known statue is that of "Manneken Pis," a peeing boy.

The piss stickers, specially made to be used in urinals, can be seen these days in the public toilets of Belgian schools, youth clubs, and pubs. They were designed by Laurent Winnock, president of the Young Socialists, the youth branch of Vande Lanotte's Socialist party. Winnock did his creative work during his office hours, which would not be worth mentioning if Winnock did not work in the offices of Vice Prime Minister Vande Lanotte, as one of his press spokesmen.

Last Friday, Belgian television asked Robert "Steve" Stevaert, the Socialist party leader, what he thought of the stickers. It had not been his idea, he stressed, but he refused to distance himself from it. He hardly could, seeing as the stickers can be ordered for free through the party's official website. For Belgian television viewers the message was clear: Bush may be our government's guest, the ministers will greet him, smile and tell him that he is most welcome, but we all know what they think of the bastard

16. Those bathrooms were not a pretty sight
Ugh, they were on our local news last night. This is one of those things that we really can't blame on Bush. It's not even a Dem/Rep. thing. It's just government incompetence & mismanagement at its finest. We've got some real financial woes here in Erie County and our elected officials are just not getting the job done. The taxpayers are pretty much staging a revolt right now.

I feel very badly for the rank and file county employees. They are being jerked around and being treated as political pawns. Since they have been threatened with layoffs since December 1st, their morale is at an all-time low right now.

There's been a lot of finger pointing at the unions, but I really can't say they are the culprit. There's a lot of fat/pork buried in that budget and the county employees and the taxpayers are bearing the brunt of this.

Just a few examples:
County parks closed to the public December 1st. Parks employees still being paid (March 17). What the hell are they doing?

Three revenue producing auto bureaus, reduced to one with reduced hours.

Golf courses now to be run on a self-supporting basis. Why they hell weren't they self-supporting before. Cripes these people are stoopid.

Enough of my rant. Carry on!

32. Revolting

As I understand a WBEN version of the potty problem it is partly due to vandalism by the ticked off county employees. They're plugging up the toilets w/the TP and doing some creative writing on the walls of the county executive's floor. I don't condone vandalism but sympathize w/them. I would certainly feel betrayed. The economy here is not going to be helpful to them either.

I can't believe the amount of pork and patronage that exists in this county. People in other counties and states should take this as a lesson.

20. Jeesh,I thought my office building was bad...
Edited on Thu Mar-17-05 11:59 PM by davsand
I work in County Government in Illinois, and we have had our issues too. Recently, they took the paper towels out of the restrooms and put those damn air dryer things in.

I asked why they'd done that and was told it was because "You guys are using too much paper towel" My response was to ask if we needed to start re-using the toilet paper...

Little did I know that it was actually much worse in other places.

34. But what a great entrepreneurial opportunity!
You have to carry your own TP in some countries... and inside the filthiest of women's washrooms in a huge market place in Costa Rica there sits a man selling two squares of flimsy TP for the equivalence of a couple of cents; which you have to purchase whether or not you have your own. I'm sure that a bright forward thinking young fellow in this county can come up a similar operation in order to make a few bucks?

Vive le capitalism!!! </sarcasm>
