Kuwait to charge U.S. military for fuel
Associated Press

KUWAIT CITY - The days when a U.S. Army truck could fill up for free at a gas station in this oil-rich state are coming to an end. Kuwait's energy minister said Thursday that U.S. troops are going to have to start paying for fuel.

In a gift that must have saved the Pentagon a fortune, Kuwait has not charged the U.S. military for fuel since the invasion of Iraq in March 2003. Tens of thousands of American Humvees, trucks and armored vehicles have rolled through the country and across the desert border into Iraq during the past two years.

"But now after the Iraqi elections ... we have to create a mechanism for payment," the energy minister, Sheik Ahmed Fahd Al Ahmed Al Sabah, told reporters.

Kuwait and the United States have agreed in principle on the matter, but the prices and other aspects are still to be worked out, he said.

3. Kuwait, US in oil dispute
Kuwait, US in oil dispute

KUWAIT CITY (AFP): The United States and its staunch ally Kuwait are locked in a dispute over Washington’s failure to pay hundreds of millions of dollars for fuel supplies for its army, a parliamentary source said Wednesday. Kuwait is asking the United States to pay some $500 million for fuel it supplied to the US army after the US-led war on Iraq two years ago but Washington has said it would pay less than one-third of the amount, the source told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The London-based pan-Arab newspaper Al-Hayat said Wednesday that the dispute was disclosed a few days ago by Islamist MP Nasser al-Sane during a meeting with his voters. Sane said that before and during the Iraq war, Kuwait supplied the US army with fuel worth $450 million free of charge, its contribution to the overthrow of the regime of Saddam Hussein.

Supplies continued after the war and the country recently demanded payment of $500 million after calculating the amount at a preferential price of $21 a barrel, Sane was quoted as saying. US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld responded with a tough-worded letter saying that Washington had liberated the country from Iraqi occupation in 1991 and because it enjoys a fiscal surplus, there was no need to demand the payment.

What is the lesson here...? You can't trust the US.

6. Wow...
Now we can add the title of "deadbeat" to the long list of insults that can be hurled at us (arrogant came to mind too, but we already knew that). Nice. Thanks Rummy. Gotta love those good old American values, huh?

8. I wish I could do that.

Let me see. I'll pump 12 dollars worth of gas and only pay for 3 dollars and 99 cents worth of gas. I wonder if I could print this story as a sort of justification and try it. I wonder what the padded room without a view would be like to live in for the next year while the head doctor reprograms me. I can just see Bush saying he'll pay what he pleases and chucking his testicles and saying "Take that A-rabs." He makes me sick. Why can't WE only pay what WE WANT TO PAY for gas?

right smack in the middle of Al Gore's campaign to $2.50/gallon in midwest, Pat Buchannon suggested that we invade Kuwait to get cheaper oil.

16. Yes Kuwait was slant-drilling, and with US equipment...guess which.
If you said Halliburton you win the Grand Prize! However, as you have a surplus in your bank account, we're not going to actually give you the Grand Prize.

15. In the Muslim World, Kuwait is a Wesern created country.
Kuwait means nothing to Muslims. This supposed country, was a Western creation after WW2. It is a country, as long as we are prepared to send Anglo-Saxon soldiers to "protect" it. And seriously, in OZ this is becoming a bigger and bigger debate than our conservative government and you American's think.
