State Bar Clears Prosecutor Over Kerry Ad
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Oregon State Bar has cleared a county prosecutor who was accused of unethical behavior after he appeared in a TV ad claiming Democratic candidate John Kerry lied about his Vietnam War experience.
The bar's nine-member panel put to rest its investigation into Clackamas County Prosecutor Alfred French when it concluded that the bar was not in a position to determine the veracity of French's statements in the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth ad, as well as in an affidavit he signed prior to making the ad.

4. You miss the point. The bar association does not self-regulate
their lawyers. Especially the ones steep in politics. The entire system needs a major enema and there should be a board composed of ordinary people who are capable of kicking out a lawyer.

2. More from the article
"The bar's nine-member panel put to rest its investigation into Clackamas County Prosecutor Alfred French when it concluded that the bar was not in a position to determine the veracity of French's statements in the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth ad, as well as in an affidavit he signed prior to making the ad.

French was suspended for two weeks by the Clackamas County district attorney's office for using office equipment to print an affidavit in which he called Kerry a liar.

Many of those who filed complaints with the Oregon State Bar felt that French, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, had submitted a false affidavit because he relied on the accounts of his fellow soldiers, rather than on personal knowledge of how Kerry behaved.

French maintains that he made it clear in the affidavit that he did not witness all of the events he spoke about."

5. Oh...in the AFFIDAVIT he says he did not witness it personally, BUT in the
ads he clearly implies he DID when he claims he served with John Kerry and John Kerry is lying. So they get to LIE on television but clear themselves with affidavits that claim they didn't personally witness the events.

9. That's exactly how it works.
So they get to LIE on television but clear themselves with affidavits that claim they didn't personally witness the events.

7. That depends on what the headline writer has been hired to do.
I think the headline writer has been hired, partially, to downplay and spin situations that might make Republicans look bad and to play up and spin situations that might make Dems look bad.

effective at spinning.

10. Here's a link to the original affidavit:
http://one-holy-catholic-apostolic.org/journal/2004/08/27.htm

I remember DU had a letter writing campaign against this guy and we were
feeling somewhat vindicated when he was put on suspension, though not for the reason we were saying he should be.
Our complaint was that if he was abusing the affidavit, what other things was he lying about? In his job as deputy prosecutor, he could have been sending people to jail based on lies.
