Sen. Boxer set to introduce amendment barring funds for ‘fake news’
Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) will introduce the following amendment to President Bush’s fiscal year 2006 budget tonight, barring any funds for U.S. government agencies that produce prepackaged news without a disclaimer that the release was paid for by the government, RAW STORY has learned.

The amendment follows; it will be introduced tonight, Boxer’s communications director David Sandretti stated. The amendment comes in the wake of a huge spread in Sunday’s New York Times which documented a massive attempt by the Bush Administration to insert prepackaged news items into television news broadcasts.

Such items were frequently run without any disclaimer that they had been paid for by the government. The Government Accountability Office has ruled that these prepackaged segments are propaganda; the Bush Administration leans on a Bush Justice Department interpretation of the law saying they are in the
clear.

Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) issued a letter to the Federal Communications Commission demanding a thorough investigation. “I strongly believe that the federal government should not be permitted to manipulate public opinion by providing news organizations with so-called ‘news reports’ that have been created by public relations experts, which are then broadcast without proper disclosure,” Sen. Kerry wrote. “Taxpayers have a right to know if their tax dollars have been used to produce the news they’re watching. This is especially disconcerting in light of recent disclosures that federal agencies have compensated professional journalists for presenting and supporting Bush Administration policies.”

3. Yay! That will mean they can get rid of Faux!!!
I am sick unto death of fake news (other than the Daily Show, which is more real than most 'legit'news) and all the damn distractions designed to keep the mutant sheep from paying attention to what the whores in the Reich Wing are up to. About fucking time. Shut them all down.

19. Dude, you are so right!
Non Sequitur: An inference or conclusion that does not follow from the premises or evidence.

:bounce:

I work computer support and today this client of mine had this problem that just didn't make any sense at all, and the more we investigated it, the stranger it got. So I said, "OK, down the rabbit hole we go."

So like if the news is FAUX we can all become mad hatters and make up whatever we want to about it, just like our dear old pressy wessy.

8. Something tells me Boxer and Kerry have been working alot together
and I'm willing to bet that they cooked up Jan. 6 together, too.

The two of them have been coming out swinging in tandem on every battle so far this year.

20. Jan 6 - was Boxer and Rep John Conyers of MI - I think..and
Jesse Jackson and about 1000 others (protesting) - if you mean the attempt to get Vote Fraud investigated prior to the Ingratiation, um Inauguration.

28. Not what I meant. Boxer and Conyers wanted democracy to be the story
not Kerry, so Kerry scheduled his Europe and Mideast trip at that time. However, Kerry sent emails to his list the day before with a heads up in support on the overall issue.

I don't think that was just coincidence.

15. They are NOT paid for by the goverment
They are paid for by us taxpayers. So the least these stories should do is be fair and balanced if they want to appear on news programming.

21. Government does pay, it just uses our money....

:hi:

Still the news is not the place for propoganda unless it is labeled as such. Public service announcement, op ed piece, whatever, but don't call it news if it's PR of any shape size or form.

Truth in advertising. Now there's a concept.

26. Yup! You said it very well.
I should be able to watch the news and not know the opinion of the newsperson/reporter/journalist. They should just report the story, give us the facts, show us any video they have, and that's it.

When they "invent" or create news stories, they should be clearly labled as such.
