Wayland man pleads guilty to threatening Vice President Cheney

Homer Shoup

(Kent County, March 17, 2005, 5:47 p.m.) A Wayland man accused of threatening the life of Vice President Dick Cheney pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday.

Authorities say 51-year-old Homer Shoup made the threat in October. Then in December, a psychiatrist determined that Shoup was competent at the time he made the threats.

The first threat came when Shoup placed a 911 call to Michigan State Police telling them he was on his way to Lansing where he would kill Vice President Cheney who was at a campaign stop.

The second threat occurred when Shoup dropped of a suspicious camera bag at 24 Hour News 8 studios.
