President Bush, his sales pitch for Social Security reform not yet winning over the nation, sought help on Friday from his mom.


Barbara Bush, wearing her trademark pearls, took the stage with the president and another of her sons, Gov. Jeb Bush. The president opened the program by reassuring people born before 1950 that their Social Security benefits would not change.


On cue, the 79-year-old former first lady said:


"I'm here because when else can I see my two elder boys. I'm here because your father and I have 17 grandchildren — all born after 1950 — and we want to know is someone going to do something about it (Social Security)?"

The Social Security system was instituted only in part to combat grinding poverty and want. One of its more important benefits is that it provides security for the social order -- without it, desperate, starving people would agitate for rebellion (as many did in the 1930s), and much as the pissed-off citizens of Paris did in the Revolution, the lives of the wealthy would be in jeopardy in any such social upheaval.

So keep the name of the program in mind throughout the debate: the program is there for Social Security, for the group as well as the individual.
