Native Americans decry Alaska exploration ruling
http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200503/s1327010.htm

There has been an angry reaction from native Americans in Alaska to the decision by the United States Senate to open up a remote wildlife refuge to oil drilling.

The Senators voted narrowly to allow exploration in the Alaska Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

This has long been a key part of President Bush's energy plan as a means to reduce US reliance on imports.

Luci Beach, of the local American Indian tribe, says the area is home to caribou, migratory birds and other wildlife.

"Sixty to 70 per cent of our diet comes from the land and caribou is one of the primary animals that we depend on for sustenance," he said.

"For us this is a human rights issue and it's a basic Aboriginal human rights issue."

The Money Behind the Debate Over Drilling in ANWR

By: Courtney Mabeus, CapitalEye
Published: Fri, 18 Mar 2005

After years of trying, Senate Republicans on Wednesday succeeded in easing the path to opening up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling, a development that promises to intensify a decades-old lobbying battle as proponents of drilling move into the homestretch of their effort.

<snip>

Two oil companies, ChevronTexaco and Exxon Mobil, rank among the top all-time campaign contributors. ChevronTexaco has contributed $8.9 million since 1989 in individual, PAC and soft money donations, 75 percent to Republicans. The company, the second largest oil producer in the country, has spent more than $38 million since 1997 to lobby Congress and the federal government. Exxon Mobil, one of the world’s largest oil producers, has contributed $8.2 million since 1989 in individual, PAC and soft money donations, 87 percent to Republicans. The company has spent more than $62 million on lobbying since 1997.

Exxon Mobil is a member of Arctic Power, which bills itself as a grassroots, non-profit organization endorsed by the Alaska legislature that has been at the forefront of the ANWR drilling issue since 1992. The organization, which includes among its 10,000 members the Alaska Chamber of Commerce and state oil and gas associations, contends on its Web site that drilling could create as many as 736,000 jobs. Artic Power has spent $1.7 million on federal lobbying since 1997.

<snip>

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R), who won a tight election last year, raised $195,000 from the industry in the 2004 election cycle alone, enough for a No. 10 ranking among all federal candidates. Alaska’s lone representative in the House, Don Young (R), has raised $874,000 from oil and gas interests since 1989, more than from any other industry. Murkowski and Young both support ANWR drilling.

20. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't ExxonMobil in the news
a few years ago regarding oil and Alaska? Something about a little spill of crude oil? And I think it did a little bit of damage to some fishing grounds and some birds and other wildlife? And wasn't ExxonMobil supposed to pay a fine or something or other? Does anyone know if they've ever paid a freakin' penny of that fine?

Edited on Sat Mar-19-05 02:22 AM by Maraya1969
We didn't know who to boycott before but NOW we know where to start. Any gas station that sells Texaco or Chevron oil will not get my business. Maybe we should tell them so.

Here is some contacts for Texaco and Chevron

Edited on Sat Mar-19-05 01:14 AM by CountAllVotes
It would be up to this tribe to start legal proceedings. I hope they have one damn good Indian lawyer because they've got the fight of their life on their hands. If they don't win, it will only set a precedent to open up other lands held by Indian people for oil drilling being the treaty laws have openings for this to occur ...

i.e. National emergency/disaster! Terror, terror, terror, breed fear and hatred .... :grr:

GOD I HATE THIS SONZABITCHES!

19. Foreign tv shows only lovely shots of the land that will be despoiled
Very little on the nonsense about making us more self-sufficient.

We continue to look like greedy or clueless idiots for electing the crowd that would let this pass.

Of course the native peoples are pissed, it's mostly about the earth, the land and keeping it for the future generations.
