Study: Abstinence May Lead to Risky Acts
By MATT APUZZO, Associated Press Writer

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Teens who pledge to remain virgins until marriage are more likely to take chances with other kinds of sex that increase the risk of sexually transmitted diseases, a study of 12,000 adolescents suggests.

The report by Yale and Columbia University researchers could help explain their earlier findings that teens who pledged abstinence are just as likely to have STDs as their peers.

The latest study, published in the April issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health, found that teens pledging virginity until marriage are more likely to have oral and anal sex than other teens who have not had intercourse. That behavior, however, "puts you at risk," said Hannah Brueckner, assistant professor of sociology at Yale and one of the study's authors.

1. Surprise, surprise.
As a teenager at a private Catholic high school, I've known that much for years.

18. No shit? Reall? I never would have known that, except for maybe
the hundreds of other studies that have proven the exact same thing.

And yet they still don't listen :-)

2. More Likely? Wow
The latest study, published in the April issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health, found that teens pledging virginity until marriage are more likely to have oral and anal sex than other teens who have not had intercourse.

I mean, I understand that abstinence ususally doesn't work. But other sexually active kids do all the variations, too. Saying it's more likely is amazing to me.

5. i think they mean oral and anal sex "replace" intercourse...

for students who pledge abstinence, cuz they think it "doesn't count," while the non-abstinence kids do more intercourse and less of the others.

7. Yes, But Even So
you would think that a most of the non-abstinence people do either oral or anal these days. It just seems like the abstinence program would at least have no harmful effect.

8. Informed kids, like informed voters act better
It is not just what kind of sex; it is being educated about all aspects of sexual activities, including birth control, transmitted diseases, etc.

Kids who take the "abstinence" pledge are just ignorant, and when their hormones charge they don't know how to handle it.

3. This is what happened
with Poppy and Bar. They did the back-door thing and Bar pooped out * nine months later.

Yeah, it's very risky. Thanks to them, there is a high risk that life as we know in on the planet is about to be snuffed out.

9. Yeah - sexuality is something that teens need to learn about. They just
do. If you push 'virginity pledges for teens' you still have to allow the person to learn about their sexuality. One should never happen without the other. Get the power out of the hands of the prudes.

11. WOW! Can you just imagine how bad it would be if we had an openly
sexual society and early sex education like the Netherlands or France. Wait a second, whaddya mean the US Teenage pregnancy rate is 9 times higher than the Netherlands and 4 times higher than France?

http://www.advocatesforyouth.org/publications/factsheet/fsest.htm

But, but, they don't have the HIGH MORAL STANDARDS that the US has!

13. Anal Sex... a virgin???
Sorry, I must be showing my age or my prudishness. If you've gone as far as anal or oral sex, you've completely missed the point of abstinence until marriage anyway. From a strictly religious point of view. Seems to me.

14. Reminds me of a Gore Vidal quote
The American expat, living in Italy for many years, famously stated that "every Italian bride is a virgin in front and a martyr behind".

15. Abstinence May Lead to Prostate Cancer
... Men who ejaculated most often actually had a 33% lower lifetime risk of prostate cancer, and this relationship grew stronger as men grew older.

For example, men who reported 21 or more ejaculations per month in their 40s had a 32% lower risk of prostate cancer later in life compared with those who reported between four and seven ejaculations per month. Men who reported more than 21 monthly ejaculations in the previous year had a 51% lower risk of prostate cancer.

Overall, an average of 21 or more ejaculations a month during a man's lifetime decreased the risk of prostate cancer later in life by 33%. And each increase of three ejaculations per week during a man's lifetime was associated with a 15% reduction in prostate cancer risk ...
