UN Says Laws Against Torture Eroding
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Louise Arbour, says one of the big challenges facing her office in the coming year is to get nations to abide by the absolute prohibition against torture. Ms. Arbour presented her annual report to the U.N. Human Rights Commission on the work done by her office during the past year and on future activities.

In her report, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, Louise Arbour, expresses her dismay over what she says is the erosion of some of the clearest and most well-established human rights norms. In particular, she singles out the long-established prohibition on the use of torture, a norm so widely accepted that it has become a matter of customary international law.

But, Ms. Arbour says this absolute prohibition against torture appears to be slipping away. She says an increasing number of countries are questioning the very existence of this ban.

2. Go Louise go! I'd bet money on her vs. Rice anyday. It will be
interesting to see how the WH handles her... probably just ignore her.

3. There goes a hundred years of progress in human rights.
All in one lousy four-year term. Thanks W. You changed the world and altered the course of western civilization.

You will be remembered by history for this and your other contributions to human progress.

7. China and Cuba are saying the report is wrong because the US is not
being sanctioned for its torture policies. Since the US is not in the report, the report is just a political propaganda tool.

They have a point.

It's true that some countries use torture as a normal means of interrogation, but thanks America for bringing it to the forefront and making it the norm! Big shout out to US AG Gonzales, I hear he just LOVES torture as a way to control people!

8. They're 'eroding' because so-called "Rule of Law" countries...
...like the U.S. are essentially ignoring the simple fact that TORTURING PEOPLE FOR ANY REASON WHATSOEVER IS WRONG!
