Nixon Library Makeover to Add Unvarnished Truth
In an effort to gain legitimacy as an official presidential library, the privately run Richard Nixon Library & Birthplace has agreed to present exhibits that are "more strictly factual" and turn over control of more of Nixon's papers and tapes to the National Archives.

Library officials have also promised to reschedule a controversial April symposium on the former president and the Vietnam War that they said they canceled because of low attendance. Numerous researchers protested, charging that the library was putting Nixon's image ahead of scholarship.

The moves, pledged in a letter to the Archives from John Taylor, the library's head, are the latest in a series of steps to blunt criticism that the facility in Yorba Linda offered only a sugar-coated view of the Nixon years.

Library officials have long sought the full respect accorded a presidential library but have operated outside the National Archives system. Nixon's is the only presidential library not part of the system.

2. They might as well include
the unvarnished truth because no matter what Nixon did he is going to come off better than chimp in the history of this country.

4. Hmmm I wonder if the Reagan Library feels the same way
I guess we will never learn the truth about Reagan or Bush 1 because Bush* has locked up their Presidential Papers against Congressional Law. And I might add that Democrats have never even questioned him about it..at least I can't remember any of them doing so..

5. Would love to see them open a Plumbers' Wing --
-- to the Nixon facility -- a eerily-lighted wax museum of the various macabre figures involved in Watergate: G. Gordon Liddy with a nail in his palm, Howard Hunt shuffling along a backalley with a suitcaseful of large bills, Donald Segretti in a Miami phone booth making crank calls to undermine Ed Muskie, and so forth.

What a dreary presidency Nixon's was. Yuck.

7. Don't forget
Martha Mitchell making those drunken late night phone calls she was so fond of... or Nixon picking up Sammy Davis Jr. by the ears.

6. Wonder if they are less hesitant, because these days
Nixon actions appear to be less offensive when compared to the current regime er administration.

12. I think the attempt is kind of............touching.
Nixon's evil seems so quaint in retrospect. I don't expect to live long enough to see any real scholarship in a Reagan/Bush I/Bush II Library.

13. Since Shrub fired the archivist
and put in his own man, I hope they make copies of everything. I'm fearful Shrub will make history disappear.
